NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Israel Klavan, execu-
tive vice president of the
Rabbinical Council of
America, died March 7.He
was 64.
He was graduated from
Yeshiva College in 1937
and was ordained by the
Rabbi Isaac Elchanan
Theological Seminary in

in his early rabbinic
Rabbi Klavan occu-
ca
pied pulpits in Fitchburg,
Mass.; Williamsport, Pa.;
and Mount Vernon, N.Y
.
In 1950 he was invited to
assume the leading execu-
tive position at the Rabbini-
- cal Council.
Rabbi Klavan's contri-
butions to Jewish life
were acknowledged by
Yeshiva University on
three separate occasions;
in 1963 he received the
Bernard Revel Award; in
1970 he was the recipient
of an honorary Doctor of
Divinity degree; in 1973
he received . the coveted
Mordechai Ben David
Award.
In 1974, the Commission
on Synagogue Relations of
the Federation of Jewish
Blanche Baren
Blanche Baren, a credit
manager at Winkelman's,
Inc., for 25 years, died
March 9 at age 61.
A native Detroiter, Mrs.
Baren leaves three daugh-
ters, Mrs. Irwin (Lorraine)
-- Fenster, Mrs. Claude
(Terry) Oster and Mrs.
Stephen (Sandra) Brown;
two brothers, Philip Fried-
man and David Freedman;
a sister, Mrs. Harry (Shir-
ley) Shiovitz; and seven
grandchildren.
Philanthropies honored
him with its Tzedaka
Award. In the same year he
was honored by the Rabbin-
ical Council at a special
dinner marking his 25th
anniversary with the organ-
ization.
In 1979, the Union of Or-
thodox Jewish Congrega-
tions of America conferred
upon him its distinguished
National Rabbinic Leader-
ship Award.
R. Lieberman
Raymond Lieberman, re-
tired superintendent_ of the
U.S. Post Office, died March
10 at age 70.
Born in Baltimore, Md.,
Mr. Lieberman held the
superintendent post for 35
years. He was a past
president of the Letter Car-
riers Association of Detroit,
past president of the Postal
Supervisors Union and past
president of the Cardoza
Club of Jewish postal em-
ployees. He served on the
executive board of the
American Federation of
Labor in Detroit.
Mr. Lieberman leaves his
wife, Edith; two -sons, Dr.
Franklin D. of San Leandro,
Calif., and Dr. Ronald of
Bethesda, Md.; a daughter,
Beverly; two sisters, Mrs.
Eva Weiss of Woodland
Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Max
(Sarah) Feldman of Laguna
Hills, Calif.; and two
grandchildren.
Sydney L. Max
Sydney L. Max, a retired
jeweler, died March 9 at age
84.
Born in Russia, Mr. Max
was the founder of the
House of Watch Bands. He
founded his business in
1927 and until 1956 it was
located on Broadway in
downtown Detroit. The firm
now is located in Southfield.
