The Israel- Awareness Group, a coalition of pro- Israeli organizations at MSU, sponsored a peace rally at the Farm Lane Bridge on the afternoon of the exchange. About 25 stu- dents participated in the rally. The students distributed balloons carrying the logo "Peace Today — Israel and Egypt" to passersby. Arab organizations had been invited to join the rally in an effort to start a dialogue between the opposing factions but had flatly refused, ac- cording to David Lengel, chairman of the Israel Music by Sam Barnett Big or small, we custom the music to your needs. 968-2 5 63 Awareness Group. MSU Arab students staged a protest against the exchange of diplomats and the Israel-Egypt peace treaty the previous night. Some 60 Arab and Ameri- can students gathered in the MSU Union lobby to de- bate the peace agreement. About 15 of the students stayed overnight in a planned 12-hour vigil op- posing the pact. The turnout was termed satisfying by Sami Esmail, president of the MSU chap- ter of the Organization of Arab Students, which spon- sored the demonstration. Esmail was convicted by Is- rael of being a member of a terrorist organization and then expelled under pres- sure from the U.S. last year. The Israel Awareness Group and the group of Arab students clashed as the demonstration opened with a two-hour march around the Union.
