OF 1-215, HIGHLAND LAKES SHOPPING CENTER Israel Women Draftees Down JERUSALEM (JTA) — The number of women drafted into the Israeli armed forces decreased by three percent between 1976 and 1978 because greater numbers of them are claim- ing exemption on religious grounds. Gen. Moshe Nativ, head of the army's manpower branch, told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Secu- rity Committee that 52.2 percent of draft age women were inducted in 1978 corn- pared to 55.2 percent in 1976. He said exemptions on religious grounds in- creased by more than seven percent last year. This was apparently the result of an amendment to the draft law, demanded by 348-0180 CAIRO (JTA) — History was made on a recent Fri- day night at the Giniza Synagogue here when members of the Israel Con- sul staff, which several days earlier settled into an office in Cairo, attended the Shabat evening services. Normally an attendance of 15 people at the Friday night services is considered good, but on this particular weekend 80 people crowded into the synagogue to ISE MI' ImENT RESTAU RANT-LOUNG E 29505 W. 9 MILE RD., SW Corner Middlebelt474-4650 WHOLE SLAB OF RIBS Includes Cole Slaw, Cottage Fries and Garlic Bread $65 ° Your Host: Mike Watzman attend the services. Hadass, of Syrian birth, and a Sephardic Jew, was honored with the cantella- tion of the traditional Fri- day night kidush prayer. Shamir Takes Ministry Post JERUSALEM (JTA) — Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir was given a recep- tion by senior Foreign Ministry officials on his first day in office Tuesday. Shamir, a Herut hard- liner who abstained when the Knesset voted to ap- prove the Camp David ac- cords and the Egyptian- Israeli peace treaty, made no comments that might have cast any light on how he plans to deal with the latest developments in the foreign policy field, but he said he was "well aware of the operations of the (foreign) ministry." He has been meetirig quietly with ministry offi- cials since Premier Menahem Begin formally offered him the post to study how it functions. After he was sworn into office Monday, Shamir received the resignation of Yosef Ciechanover, di- rector general of the foreign ministry, who said he was quitting for "personal reasons." Ciechanover was a long time protege of former Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan. When Dayan res- igned last Oct. 21, Begin asked Ciechanover to stay on until a new minister was appointed. Ciechanover asked that his resignation become ef- fective as soon as possible." Tiny Synagogues Displayed in OP A reception to kick off the exhibit of synagogue minia- tures by Aid Kushner will be held 7 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Park Library. The ex- hibit will run through April 5 at the library. The reception and exhibit are sponsored by the arts and cultural commission and the Friends of the Oak Park Library. The public is invited free of charge.
