Of this number 3,212,000 were Jews, and 618,000 non- Jews. The figures were pub- lished by the government's Central Statistical Bureau. In 1979 the population in- creased by 93,000 (3.5 per- cent). Of this number some 72,000 were Jews. Immi- gration accounted for a growth of 37,000 compared with 26,000 the previous year, 1978. The Jewish population grew at a rate slightly higher than two percent compared with a gross growth rate of more than three percent for non-Jews. In the last decade, Israel's population increased by more than 900,000, of whom 706,000 were Jews and of that number 471,000 were the result of native births. The report says nothing about the number of those who left the country during the last decade. Included among the immigrants to Israel were 13,200 engineers, 6,660 doctors and dentists, 6,400 tedhni- cians, 12,100 educators, 5,900 nurses and 6,200 ar- tists, authors and compos- ers. The foundation of true joy is in the conscience. A Benton Harbor man who claimed he lost his job at Bendix Corp. and was subjected to malicious per- secution because of his foreman's anti-Semitic atti- tude has been awarded $24,000 in damages by a Berrien County Circuit Court jury. Joseph I. Marcus, 60, had sued Bendix foreman Har- land Rochefort and the company's director of labor relations, Rex Anderson. Marcus, who began work- ing for Bendix in 1963, claimed that after Rochefort took over as foreman in 1975, that he (Marcus) was cited for eight job violations Brain Workshop REHOVOT — The effects on the brain of drugs widely used in treating depression, tension, and pain were among the major subjects discussed' at a European Molecular Biology Organ- ization Workshop held last 'week at Ein-Bokek, on the Dead Sea, under the organ- ization and sponsorship of the Weizmann Institute of Science. The workshop concen- trated on the interactions of drugs with brain tissue, as well as on many normal biochemical processes occurring in the adult and in developing brains. Of special interest was the re- port on the isolation of a substance from urine and the brain which could be the body's natural tranquilizer, acting much like the well- known drug valium. This discovery was made by Dr. M. Nielsen of the Sct. Hans Mental Hospital in Ros- kilde, Denmark. Ninety scientists — half of them from Israel and half from abroad — gathered for the five-day EMBC Work- shop on Drug Receptors in the Central Nervous Sys- tern. within 18 months. Marcus testified that in 1976, Rochefort told him, "It's a shame Hitler didn't get all you guys. If I had my way, there wouldn't be any Jews in Bendix." Rochefort denied that he had made any anti-Semitic remarks. Yiddish Class Seeks Students Workmen's Circle school board announced that regis- tration for adult Yiddish classes is now being ac- cepted.
