'Saving Graces' a Delicate
Look at 'Mixed' Marriage

By HEIDI PRESS

Trust, faith and love are
the major components of a
new novel about the mar-
riage of a Catholic woman
who converts to Judaism
and her Orthodox Jewish-
raised husband.
Titled "Saving Graces,"
the St. Martin's Press book
by Rhoda Tagliacozzo, an
Orthodox Jew who married
an Italian Jew, emphasizes

cultural
differences,
philosophical and theologi-
cal conflicts that tend to
arise when persons of differ-
ing faiths and cultures
marry.
The book focuses on the
marriage of Naomi Finkels-
tein (nee Annunziata
"Nancy" Calogero) and
Shep (born Saulie) Finkels-
tein. The novel shows how
the two are forced to con-
front their faith in each
other and themselves,
while, at the same time,
exploring their faith in God.
That is no easy task,
especially for Naomi,
who came from a loveless
household and was edu-
cated in a strict Catholic
education system. She is
an intelligent woman, but
her compulsion to be a
proper Orthodox Jewish
wife is overwhelming,
and a faux pas here and
there did 'much to add
strain to an already tense
situation.
Shep's
overbearing
mother, Bessie, will not win
any congeniality prizes.
Learning of her son's im-
pending marriage to a con-
vert from Catholicism, she
does all short of rending her
garments and sitting shiva.
Faced with all that, Shep
must ultimately decide
whether or not he wishes to
continue with the marriage.-
Disgusted with his wife's
shenanigans, he issues his
wife a "bill of divorcement"
as she leaves for Italy to
bury her deceased father.
He uses the time of her

month-long absence to
think and upon her return
he has cooled towards his
wife.
Yet, he still questions her
sincerity and devises a test,
which at the same time be-
comes a test for him too. On
Yom Kippur, as the rest of
his family attends services,
Shep steals away to the
non-Jewish neighborhood
and orders a pizza to be sent
to his wife, to see whether
she has truly accepted the
obligations of a Jewish wife
by ignoring the food, or has
rejected them and washed
her hands of the whole
thing.
Naomi's Yom Kippur
choice is the saving grace
of the marriage.
Her first novel, Ms. Tag-
liacozzo's book is skillfully
written and worthy of much
thought as each chapter is
read. A special device is
used by the author: As each
chapter is introduced, it is
titled with the name of a
Jewish holiday and under-
neath is a quote from a
source on which Jewish life
is based, exists and sur-
vives. The quotes seem to
serve as foreshadowings.,
Rhoda
Tagliacozzo's
"Saving Graces": is an im-
portant piece of contempor-
ary Jewish fiction because it
serves to provide a better
understanding of interfaith
marriage.
It approaches a sensitive
issue intellectually and
with compassion. "Saving
Graces" is a truly notable
contribution to modern
Jewish literature.

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
The price of a 3 1/2-room
apartment in Jerusalem
rose 32 percent during the
last quarter of 1979, com-
pared to five percent for a
similar apartment in Tel
Aviv.
The average price for that
apartment in Jerusalem
now stands at IL 2.5 million
($62,500), compared to IL
2.1 million ($52,000) in Tel
Aviv.
Apartment price in-
creases last year, however,

urbs (202 percent), Sharon

mobile generator, to pro-
vide an independent
source of power for
emergency lighting. Two
way radios link the
Ta'aran with other MDA
units and with MDA
Headquarters.
Every life support unit is
staffed by a physician, a
senior medic, 10 specially
trained volunteers and an
ambulance driver. Each
volunteer undergoes ap-
proximately 100 hours of
training, including a 48
hour advanced course spe-
cially for Ta'aran. Practice
drills with full mobilization
are conducted every three
months and a call-up sys-
tem has been worked out
which permits the Ta'aran
to leave the MDA station
within two to five minutes
of receiving a disaster call.
To date the Ta'aran has
been mobilized on at least a
dozen occasions and has
given primary treatment to
scores of victims. MDA has
found these mobile life sup-
port units to be a fast, effec-
tive and efficient method of
handling civilian mass
casualties.
Equipment and medical
supplies for the Ta'aran are
provided by American Red
Magen David for Israel, the
sole U.S. support arm of
MDA.

MDA Perfects Mobile Unit
to Aid in Major Emergency

TEL AVIV — At the-first
international conference on
First Aid at the Scene of an
Accident, Dr. Nancy L.
Caroline, medical director
of Magen David Adorn, Is-
rael's emergency medical
service, reported on the
solution found by MDA to
the complex logistic and
medical problems of rapidly
furnishing sufficient
equipment and trained
manpower under emer-
gency conditions.
According to Dr.
Caroline, MDA has de-
veloped mobile life support
units (Ta'aran) to provide a
portable triage area that
may be deployed at the dis-
aster scene, permitting
early treatment and stabili-
zation of large numbers of
casualties prior to evacua-
tion to hospitals.
The Ta'aran itself resem-
bles a large ambulance, but
it is not intended for trans-
portation of the injured. In-
stead, the vehicle carries
medical personnel and
equipment, including 30
stretchers on the roof and a
shelf-lined interior filled
with supplies.
Each Ta'aran unit has
been designed to func-
tion independently as a
triage and resuscitation
base and each unit is
equipped with its own
