There is a great variety in the choral writ- ing: four-part and eight- part pieces (18 double choruses) that are treated either polyphoni- cally in fugues and dou- ble fugues or chordally, sometimes in a recitative-like manner. The few arias and duets offer lyrical interludes be- tween the dramatic choruses, which depict natural events such as the catastrophe brought about by flies, locusts, and hailstorms, and the breathtaking description of the disaster that befell the Egyptians in the Red Sea. He wrote "Moses' Song," which now forms the second part of the oratorio, completing it in 11 days, and then composed "Exodus," now the first part, in two weeks. JERUSALEM (JTA) — After a period in the dol- drums last year, the flow of cash from the United Jewish Appeal, through the United Israel Appeal to Is- rael has picked up sharply in recent months. Figures for the first two months of 1980 show an increase of $4.5 million compared to the same period last year. The turnabout has coin- cided with the appointment to the post of national cash chairman of Edward Cad- den, 53, of Chicago. Because of the success-story told by the figures, Cadden, who grew to UJA prominence as chairman of the Chicago campaign, has been hailed in national UJA circles as something of a whizz-kid. Cadden denies rumors rampant in Israel that a trend is developing among American federations whereby a greater propor- tion of UJA funds is being allocated to local needs and lesser sums for Israel. "There may be isolated in- stances which I do not know of," 'he said, "but there is no such trend." Cadden Similarly, scotches another Israeli rumor — that past givers have cancelled pledges or ceased giving because they disapprove of Israeli settlement policy. The cases where he comes across such arguments are "very rare," says Cadden. "And usually this is an excuse for not giving . . . I know there is worry about this in Israel and among some UJA circles. But I myself don't feel political views affect giving." Cadden also reports hear- tening news that campaign pledges are up this year by 18 percent over last year. Unfulfilled pledges remain constant at the UJA's longtime low level of four- to-five percent. - • Right-Winger- Is Sentenced • CRISP GREEN SALAD ONE SUCCULENT LOBSTER TAIL RICE HOT DRAWN all 1 hR SERVED ON SUNDAYS THRU THURSDAYS DURING REGULAR DINNER HOURS c, continental Restaurant Systems th DBCIC %It AK 1100011 14. 11(11% 26855 Greenfield Rd.
