"Mr

The Best of Everything

(Continued from Page 36)
Liverpool, England who
called themselves the
Beatles.
"Through the decades,
adults have been taking les-
sons in mambo, cha cha,
rumba, tango and the
merangue and loving the
music of Xavier Cugat,
Carmen Cavellaro and
other Latin melody bands.
"And then came disco.
Even the older set, who
covered their ears when the
kids played blasting rock
and roll on their stereos, got
into the act. Many jitter-
bugs of the 1940s responded
to disco — an invitation to
fun, fantasy, fulfillment
and freedom of expression
on the dance floor —a
rhythmic letting go of emo-
tions.
"Disco was the successor
to Elvis and the Beatles.
And rock, soul and disco
were products of the 20th
Century — doing the boogie
and bridging the generation

gap.
"Even non-rock and
rollers like Count Basie
and Ethel Merman and
such jazz greats as Her-
bie Mann and Herbie
Hancock have cut disco
tunes. And folks who did
the jerk and the twist in
the good old days have
been bouncing along to
the hustle. Some say
Benny Goodman's swing
was actually the begin-
ning of disco.
"If you've been hanging
out at the latest, hottest dis-
cotheques in town, you're
probably considered one of
the 'with it' poeple. Dis-
cotheques may still be a
growing fantasy land to
some, but things seem to be
changing.
"Rumor has it that disco
has finally had its day. A
few discotheques are start-
ing to alternate live bands
with rock and roll records.
And swing, from which
disco evolved, is coming
back strong according to
some experts who also pre-
dict the return of the Latin
dance.
"Those mambo, rumba
and cha cha lessons many of
-us took might come in
handy if we can remember
the steps. And the jitterbugs
of the 1940s may be making
a big comeback, so start
practicing."
