JERUSALEM — Over
the past 40 years,
Jerusalem's Biblical Zoo
has developed into one of
the most unique zoological
gardens in the world. The
aim of the zoo, the brain-
child of Professor Aharon
Shulov, is to gather at least
one — if not a pair — of each
of the animals mentioned in
the Bible.
"Approximately 130
animals are named in the
Bible," says Prof. Shulov
who founded the zoo in
1939, just about 10 years be-
fore the State of Israel came
into existence. Today the
zoo proudly displays almost
all of them. "Besides repat-
riating to this country all
the animals mentioned in
the Bible," he says, "the
purpose of the zoo is to give
the public, especially
schoolchildren, a more in-
timate knowledge of the
Bible by actually bringing it
to life for them."
Appropriately placed
signs cite references to ani-
mals in the Bible and the
Koran, and live tableaux
illustrate Biblical parables
and sayings.
From its site in what
eventually became
downtown Jerusalem, the
zoo was moved to Mount
Scopus. After the War of In-
dependence in 1948, Mount
Scopus became an isolated
enclave in the middle of
Jordanian territory.
The Jordanians allowed
the zookeepers to move
whatever animals re-
mained alive to the zoo's
current site in Jerusalem's
Romema quarter. Through-
out the years, it has built up
its collection, and while
concentrating on those
animals referred to in the
Bible, it houses a sizable
menagerie of all types of
animal life.

Last year, 92 percent of
the zoo's approximately
$100,000 budget was
covered by the zoo itself —
that includes donations
from friends of the zoo and
modest entrance fees. (Gov-
ernment and city aid
covered the rest of the
budget.)
Today, however, the zoo
has become one of the more
innocent victims of Israel's
galloping inflation. For the
first time in 28 years, the
zoo will not be able to bal-
ance its budget and Prof.
Shulov expects a deficit of
about $70,000.
"Every
mayor
of
Jerusalem has come to me
and said, `Shulov, build up
the zoo,' and to every mayor
I say, 'Every new animal
means money,' "
Perhaps the most ambiti-
ous of the plans to develop
the zoo is the re-creation of
Noah's Ark, which is soon to
begin in a wooded area ac-
cording to Biblical descrip-
tion. Dimensions and build-
ing plans have been deter-
mined according to Biblical
and Talmudic sources, and
research has been done to
limit the wide scope of ani-
mals known today to those
that existed in the days of
Noah.
When he talks about the
zoo, Professor Shulov
switches easily from Bibli-
cal verse to tales of adven-
ture. His modern day stories
recall Jewish animal lore of
earlier centuries in which
ravens talk, lions sing.
He tells of the 1941 es-
capades of runaway vul-
tures discovered atop the
British police headquarters.
(The same two vultures are
now the last survivors of the
original collection.)
Prof. Shulov insists that
animal language is univer-
sal in its appeal. And cer-
tainly the Biblical Zoo, at-
tracting Arab schoolchil-
dren, nuns from nearby
convents, Hebrew speaking
nature classes, local
families and foreign vis-
itors, provides that "com-
mon ground" envisioned by
Israel's first zoo director
Shulov so many years ago.
