Friday, March 1, 1980 11 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Autopsy Issue Angers Agudath NEW YORK — The lead- ership and rank and file members of Hadassah in the United States were called upon to join in the battle to stop the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem from perform- ing autopsies without per- mission of next of kin. This call, issued to Hadassah president Mrs. Bernice Tannenbaum by the president of Agudath Is- rael of America, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, followed the controversy raised when the Hadassah Hospital per- formed an autopsy on a young yeshiva student, Yehoshua Sloma, who had been murdered by Arab ter- rorists in Hebron, and then transplanted his kidney to an anti-Jewish Arab youth. The Hadassah Hospital authorities said that they abided by current Israeli law which permits autop- sies without the family's permission when authorized by three doctors. Agudath Israel in Israel has now accelerated its campaign to encourage the Begin government to fulfill its coalition agreement to pass new legislation which would allow autopsies only when authorized by next of kin. Egyptian's Words Not State Policy CAIRO (ZINS) — Egypt assured Israel through an unofficial channel that re- cent anti-Israel statements by a senior Egyptian official reflected only his personal opinion and not state policy. The assurance was carried by the weekly magazine Oc- tober, whose editor, Anis Mansour, is one of President Anwar el-Sadat's closest confidants. Hassan el-Tohamy, presidential adviser with the rank of deputy prime minister, said in a Kuwaiti newspaper interview last month that the "demi-state of Israel" was approaching its end. "We have taken the mat- ter to the highest sources, who commented that el- Tohamy's statements re- flect his own personal view," October said. Delta to Florida Wintertime. And the leaving is easy. Jewish Concerns Are Unchanged WASHINGTON (JTA) — The major concerns of American Jewry in the mid-1960s will remain the major concerns in the 1980s but two new issues have been added, according to Bnai Brith task force re- ports in 1966 and 1979. The key concerns ex- pressed in 1966, the date of the first study, and in 1979 remain, in order, Jewish survival, anti-Semitism and related concerns, and relationship to Israel. The latest survey reflects equal concern over the dis- integration of the Jewish family and about the effec- tiveness of the organized Jewish community, two concerns largely ignored in 1966. • • • ‘'` ' " . • • -• ''' • ,•••• ••••••,*x; • ;;;:, • . • . en you are k sa U* P • • • • • • '
