George Bush, the candi-

a process that would include
the Soviet Union.

"There are no 'quick-fix'
solutions to this complex is-
sue. Moreover, a Geneva
Conference-type approach
would provide the Soviets
with additional oppor-
tunities to meddle in the
Middle East with little
likelihood of achieving
practical results."

It was during the

the summer Olympic
Games in response to the
Soviet invasion of Af-
ghanistan, but doubted
that the invasion was tied
to Soviet designs on
Mideast oil.
He said the Soviets have
always pushed for external
security.
Toon said that President
Anwar Sadat of Egypt "has
been very useful, and as
long as he is around there is
a real chance for peace be-
tween Israel and her adver-
saries."
He said that a Middle
East settlement must mean
resolution of the Palesti-
nian problem, but argued
against an independent
Palestinian state on the
West )#ank. "Israel's West
Bank settlement policy,
however, is causing all
kinds of problems for the
U.S.," he added.
He described his atti-
tude toward the PLO as
the same as Israel's and
stated that if the PLO be-
came more flexible and
recognized Israel's right
to exist it would put the
U.S. in a difficult pos-
ition.
Dr. Paul, former chief of
staff of Sinai Hospital of De-
troit, was cited for his many
years of support of Akiva.
The presentation from the
school was made by his

bota, and followed a pre-
sentation from the hospital
made by the current chief of
staff, Dr. Howard Jacobs.
Irving Nusbaum paid
tribute to the late Zvi Tom-
kiewicz during the program
and announced that Akiva
had named its beit midrash
in Tomkiewicz's honor.
Other program partici-

Greenstein, Rabbi Gerald
Teller, Edward Traurig,
