Church-State
Separation
Editor, The Jewish News:
On behalf of the Jewish
Community Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit, I want to
commend you for your ra-
tional and insightful edito-
rial of Feb. 8 on the
Church-State Separation
Doctrine. The piece .was
most timely, considering
the current effort in the
state legislature to mandate
periods for voluntary prayer
in the public schools.
As you know, the Jewish
Community Council is in
agreement with your sup-
port of Supreme Court deci-
sions defining the public
schools as "religiously neut-
ral." We have consistently
made our views known, and
have notified the governor,
and House and Senate lead-
ership, of our opposition to
such legislation as House
Bill 4508.
