David Elazar, a former
Detroiter who now lives
here with his family and is
associated with the Kfir
aeronautical plant, has
made an appeal for an
American Jewish commu-
nity to "adopt" the Rishon
Conservative synagogue
and thus enable it to exist
and prosper.
In his appeal, Elazar
pointed to the discrimina-
tion against non-Orthodox
congregations and the diffi-
culties they confront. He de-
scribed the plight of the
Rishon Conservative
synagogue, stating: ,
"There are Orthodox
groups which hold Shabat
services in various public
buildings. When the Con-
servative congregation also
requested space, they were
told they could have the
space as long as they would
not use it for prayer. When
they had a study evening,
the Labor Party of Rishon
gave them a room with the
condition that they would
not advertise the evening
publicly.
"The congregation des-
perately needs assistance
both financially and mor-
ally. It presently rents a
kindergarten for IL 3,000

Syrian Tanks
Draw Warning
JERUSALEM — Deputy
Premier Yigael Yadin
joined Premier Menahem
Begin last week in warning
Syria not to take any offen-
sive measures in the north.
Speaking before the 21st In-
ternational Conference of
the World Union for Pro-
gressive Judaism here,
Yadin said thousands of Sy-
rian tanks were stationed
on the northeastern front.
In Tel Aviv, Israeli in-
telligence services have dis-
tributed two aerial recon-
naissance photographs
showing the Soviet-made
T-34 tanks in the hands of
Palestinian terrorists.
The photos bear out Is-
raeli reports and cor-
roborating information by
the Christian Phalangist
radio in Lebanon, that the
Palestine Liberation
Organization was receiving
heavy equipment from Rus-
sia.
Book Examines
Utopian Societies
"The Boundaries of
Utopia," an essay by Carol
Weisbrod, has been pub-
lished by Pantheon Books.
In the essay, Ms. Weis-
brod examines the utopian
communities of the 19th
Century which were radi-
cally deviant from most of
American society at that
time. She compares the
Utopians to the Mormons in
her look at the legal aspects
of communitarian experi-
ments of that era.
Ms. Weisbrod was
graduated from Columbia
Law School and is currently
a professor in the law school
at the University of Connec-
ticut.

HAPPY PURIM
Purim is the time to . . .
SEND MISHLOACH MONOS
a gift of at least two kinds of edibles (cakes, fruits, beverages.
etc.) to at least one friend on Sunday (March 2nd). before
sunset.
THE "PURIM KITS" you may have received (from Michigan
Chabad-Lubavitch) containing a bag of peanuts, candies and
other edibles are not intended primarily for your own consump-
tion — but for you to give to a friend on PURIM, Sunday, March
2 in fulfillment of your obligation to observe the Mitzva of
Mishloach Monos. Similarly, the two pennies are to be given to
two needy people (or dropped into charity-boxes). In greater
fulfillment of this Mitzva, you may wish to add extra money of
your own.
If you have eaten the food items — zol zein tsu gezunt (enjoy.
enjoy— in good health), but give instead two kosher edibles of
your own to a friend.
GIVE MATONOS L'EVYONIM
at least one penny to each of two poor people on Sunday
(March 2). If you cannot find a poor person, put it in a Pushka
(charity box), before sunset.
The above minimum requirements for the observance of these
2 Purim Mitzvos. However, the more charity one gives to the
poor, and the more Mishloa'ch Monos to friends — the better.
LISTEN to the MEGILLAH
(Book of Esther) — twice: once on Saturday night (March n
and again on Sunday morning (March 2).
SAY AL HANNISSIM
(special Purim Prayer) — both in Shmoneh Esray and Birches
Hamozon (Grace after Meals).
EAT the festive PURIM MEAL
should be eaten on Sunday afternoon.
While Mishloach Monos and Matonos L'evyonim, as all Mitzvos, are
an obligation for people who are Bar or Bas Mitzva, young children
should also observe these wonderful Mitzvos, from the point of view
of education and training.
• Since this year Purim begins Saturday night, one should be extra careful not to
begin Purim preparations, drive to shut or carry a Megilla to services unless it is
after 7M p.m., the time Shabbos ends in the Detroit metro area
