Esther invites the king
and Haman to two dinners,
at the second of which she
reveals her identity. While
the king does not call "off
with his head," he takes
steps which are just as effec-
tive: he has Haman hanged
on the gallows which
Haman had constructed to
"take care" of Mordecai.
Luckily, the plot had
been caught in time, and
the king had managed to
send the proper in-
structions to all 127 of his
provinces. Instead of
being the victims, the
Jews rise up and get rid
of all their oppressors
and tormentors.

eral Jewish communities
are known to have cele-
brated more than one Purim
each year, in memory of
days when they were saved
from othei Hamans.
For many years the Jews
of Egypt observed Cairo
Purim to celebrate their
miraculous delivery on
Adar 27, 1524. At that time,
the leader of Egyptian
Jewry was the master of the
government mint, Ab-
raham de Castro. One day
the governor decreed that
all new coins should be
struck bearing his name in
place of Selim I, the Turkish
Sultan who also ruled over
Egypt.
De Castro refused as it
amounted to treason, and
he fled to the protection
of the sultan in Constan-
tinople. This left the Jews
of Cairo at the mercy of
the furious governor,
who threatened them
with imprisonment or
death if they did not pay
him a large sum of money

habit of enjoying coinci-
dences. This is how some ob-
servers see the whole saga
of the founding of the state
of Israel, for example.
We Jews have had many
"friends," one of the most
notable having been
Stalinist Russia. By some
lucky coincidence. Russia
and all its satellites went
along with the UN resolu-
tion calling for the founding
of the state. This was one of
the few occasions in decades
when the U.S. and the
USSR voted together on a
major international issue in
the UN.
And in those gloomy days
when even Arab armies
were poised to launch an
all-out attack against the
fledgling state, when the
Freddy
Sheyer
entire "air force" consisted
of three Piper Cub planes
that "bombed" the enemy by
throwing Molotov cocktails
overboard, when the
ammunition that existed
had been brewed in various
cellars, that was the time
when our Russian "friend"
had Czechoslovakia decide
to sell modern arms to Is-
rael. Without that lucky
coincidence our forces
would never have fought
and won.
And when all the profes-
sional "advisers" told David
Ben-Gurion not to try the
patience of the U.S., and to
delay the proclamation of
the state, by a lucky coinci-
dence Ben-Gurion ignored
them all. What had been a

denly became a reality.
by a certain date. Fortu-
nately, his treachery was
discovered in time and he
was beheaded.
A century later, German
Jews celebrated Vincenz
Purim. As usual, they were
being blamed for hard times
in the country. A baker
named Vincenz Fettmilch
declared himself "a new
Haman" and organized at-
tacks on the Jewish popula-
tion, first in the ghetto of
Worms, next in Frankfurt.
It was fortunate that the
governor — Frederic — con-
sidered the pogroms an act
of civil disobedience and he
mustered his cavalry to put
down the riots. "The new
Haman" was hanged and
the other rioters were com-
pelled to pay damages to the
Jews. Therefore the Jews of
Frankfurt instituted a spe-
cial "Purim" on Elul 27,
1614.
In Persia, it was custom-
ary to hold a celebration at
Hamdan, where the tombs
of Mordecai and Esther are
believed to be located.
History has come full cir-
cle and the successors fo
those Persian Jews — now
the Jews of Iran — live in
fear of a modern-day
Haman ... the Ayatollah
Khomeini.
There are still many
Jewish communities living
under oppression. By celeb-
rating Purim, we are ex-
