Executive Suite
Jobs Up•for Jews

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The American Jewish
Committee has announced
the completion of a three-
year program, initiated by
its Philadelphia chapter,
which it said has led to a
substantial increase in the
employment of Jews in
upper-level executive posi-
tions with Provident
Mutual Life Insurance Co.
The Philadelphia chapter
brought the issue of execu-
tive suite jobs for Jews to
the attention of the
Pennsylvania Human Rela-
tions Commission.
Negotiations brought an
agreement in 1976 in which
the firm committed itself to-
e substantial increase in
employment of Jews for
such jobs in a three-year ef-
fort.
Michael Steinig, chair-
man of the chapter's
execuive advisory program,
said the insurance firm now
had four Jewish officers, as
contrasted to none when the
agreement was reached. In
addition, Steinig said, the
company now has 13 Jewish
employes in upper-level
administrative posts. In
1976, Steinig said, the firm
had seven Jews in such posi-
tions.

Israel Marks
Record Tourism

NEW YORK — A record
300,000 American tourists
visited Israel during 1979,
representing a 2 percent
jump over the 1978 record
year; while only a small
percentage increase, the
figure compares very favor-
ably with the overall de-
cline in numbers of Ameri-
can tourists crossing the At-
lantic during 1979,..as a re-
sult of the economic situa-
tion • in the United States.
The United States is Israel's
largest source of tourism.
Announcing these statis-
tics in New York, Israel
Zuriel, Israel's Commis-
sioner for Tourism to North
America, attributed Israel's
continued increasing
tourism from the U.S. to a
number of factors, including
Israel's favorable exchange
rates for the dollar; hotel
rates lower than most of
Europe; and the peace
agreement between Israel
and Egypt.
A total of 1,138,000
tourists visited Israel in
1979 and tourism remained
Israel's number-one source
of foreign-currency net in-
come, surpassing other ex-
port industries such as
diamonds and agricultural
produce.
