BER- HERSCHEL NARDI, who recently put on a sensational show for the Tenth Annual Hasidic Happening, at Ford Au- ditorium, is one of the very few people I know (Myron Cohen is another) who can put across a dialect story in the fine art of which it has retained survival ... Makes no difference how old the joke is ... The handling by old pros like Bernardi or Cohen are without equal. Who but people like them could tell this one ... about Mr. Goodman being the kind of husband who be- lieved he was entitled to a night off every week .. . What's more, he sold Mrs. Goodman on the proposition . 'So every Wednesday, regular as clockwork, he pedaled off by himself . Only one Wednesday, he neglected to come back home .. For seven years he was among the missing ... Then, one Wednesday af- ternoon, he suddenly ap- peared ... His wife, over- joyed, began calling all her Journalist Due for WSU Report friends . . "Hey, - protested Mr. Goodman, "whassa big idea?" . . "I thought I'd whip up a little welcome home party for you this eve- ning," she explained .. "What?" roared Mr. Good- man, "on my night out?" Myron Cohen's favorite is the one about the two Jewish women in Brooklyn who were talking and one said to the other, "If I live, I'll see you Wednesday — if not, Thursday." ... The late and great Bill Robinson, the foremost black star of his time, used to get howls with the one about a little soldier who tried to break out of camp and was stopped by the guard . . . Our hero chal- lenged the guard with, "I've got a mother in Heaven, a father in hell and a girl in Harlem — and I'm gonna see one of 'em tonight!!" Barry Rogow, 17-year-old son of Emily and Sonny Rogow, was Bernardi's chauffeur while in Detroit . Bernardi stayed at the Plaza Hotel and had to call off an engagement the next evening in Grand Rapids because of intestinal flu .. Barry stayed overnight with him, getting Bernardi medicines and whatever else he needed. "What a great guy!" says Barry. David Kline, an Ameri- can journalist who covered the Afghanistan situation, will give a report 8 p.m. Tuesday. in the Helen L. DeRoy Lecture Hall on the Wayne State University campus. There is no charge for Kline's talk which is spon- sored by the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at WSU. Musical, Choir at Area Temple "A Place To Be Me," a new musical drama for students in grades three and above, produced by Albion Prod- uctions, will be presented 2 p.m. March 9 at the Bir- mingham Temple. Tickets will be available at the door. Meanwhile, the Kenneth Jewell Chorale will entertain 7:30 p.m. March 16 at the Birmingham Temple. For tickets, call Evelyn Kreger, 544-8350. The series is supported by the state of Michigan through a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts. The committee would be headed by Deputy Defense Minister Mordechai Zipori. Recently there were reports of irregularities in West Bank land deals. Words may be either ser- vants or masters. If the former they may safely guide us in the way of truth. — If the latter they intoxi- cate the brain and lead into swamps of thought where there is no solid footing. 26645 Hoover Rood • Warren Michigan • S of 11 Mile Rd near 696 • PH. 313-759-0711 1! !
