The Best of Everything

IT IS JUST LIKE Roc-
kefeller Center. in New
York ... Or the outdoor
skating rink at Hart Plaza
reminds folks of New York's
Rockefeller Center . . .
Whatever, but there's one
thing Rockefeller Center
doesn't have ... a very fine
restaurant like Down
Under at Hart Plaza on Jef-
ferson ... where you can
drink, dine and watch the
skaters drift melodiously
(or flop) to skating rhythms.
This is great dining
entertainment ... looking
out the huge Down Under
windows and watching the
skaters having fun ...
There's no charge to skate
. and those without can
rent them for $2 an hour .. .
A lot of folks waiting for ta-
bles take their skates and go
around a while until time to
come on in ... Many go out
after eating to work off some
of the food.
It's a veritable Winter
Wonderland ... excitingly
different.
The food and service is
very good ... especially
when you have a courte-
ous, efficient and ever-
smiling waitress like
Linda La Porte.
Owners Doug Diehl and
Fred and Dennis Silber not
only have the fine Down
Under restaurant ... but
also all the food carry-out
concessions at Hart Plaza
. They even rent you your
skates.
The menu, soon to be
changed, is interesting with
its large amount of seafood
and steaks . . . There'll be
hamburgers, salads, crepes,
etc. to accent a lighter side
of dining.
If a person asks how the
name Down Under was
come by, the reason is very
simple ... it's down under!
. . . Valet parking almost
immediately next door by
the Veteran's Memorial
Bldg... . and then down the
stairs to a beautiful "new
world" . . . Skaters love it
because there is very little
swirling wind ... and
people skating are wearing
everything . . . one gal even
gliding merrily along in an
ankle-length mink coat.
The Down Under Res-
taurant with its high-
backed booths, window
tables and chairs, long
bar cocktail lounge with
piano entertainment, is
one of the best things to
happen to Downtown De-
troit ... When you've got
people like general man-
ager Leo Fein (easily
among the best), very
personable young Ryan
Diehl, night manager,
and pleasant Susan
Zukovich, dining room
manager, among the per-
sonnel, there is little
chance for anything but
success.
Downtown Detroit beams
with pride at having a place
like the Down Under .. .
and well it should.
RESTAURANT OWN-
ERS- BEWARE . . . of
people going around or cal-
ling to say they are putting

out "The official dining
guide for the Republican
Convention" being held
here in July ... This is false
and these people could be
treading on the dangerous
ice of fraud.
There is a reputable one
to be put out, however, with
tips on how to treat the con-
ventioneers, etc. . . . The
only cost will be a stipend to
help pay for the printing.
It will be published by the
Detroit Chamber of Com-
merce ... People like my-
self, along with many from
other publications, both
metropolitan and suburban,
are on a sub-steering com-
mittee.
If you have any questions,
don't hesitate to call
Marsha Arter at the Detroit
Chamber of Commerce.
LOU BETH LEVINE is
the vivacious, effervescent,
always smiling and happy
hostess from 11 a.m. to 3
p.m. at Dubbs Country
Kitchen, 10 Mile and
Greenfield.
ANTOINE'S on Wood-
ward and Lincoln in Royal
Oak had the perfect setting
for Valentine's Day ... with
its usual beautiful red and
white decor throughout.
Each experience there so
far brings us to eat the Gus,
which is sirloin of beef that
looks like and is made like
Gyros pressed lamb . . . This
time we also tasted the
shish kebob which was ten-
derly excellent.
Head waitress in the
morning and noon is a
dandy ... Joannie Castle-
man, who many folks of the
northwest area will re-
member with her pleasant,
wonderful smile.
Day and night manager is
Raad Manjo, brother of
Saadi Manjo, owner of An-
toine's with Mark Barbot.
