Ali had been in India and in Africa as President Car- ter's special emissary to ob- tain support for the Carter Administration's boycott of the Olympic Gaines in Mos- cow this summer as part of the U.S. response to the Soviet invasion of Af- ghanistan. In the bi-weekly, "India Today," dated Feb. 1-15, Ali spoke of Zionists when asked about the "militant revival" of Islam in Iran, and the holding of "your coun- trymen hostage." Ali, saying that "those people in Iran are fanatics," and that "the other Moslems in the world have con- demned their action," declared, "Religion ain't bad; it's people who are bad. You know the entire power structure is Zionist. They control America; they control the world. They are really against the Islam reli- gion. So whenever a Mus- lim does something wrong, they blames the religion." An Associated Press dis- patch, reporting Ali's re- marks about Zionism, quoted him as saying that he did not remember talk- ing about Zionists. Parley Stresses Israel's Needs MIAMI BEACH (JTA) — More than 30 Jewish com- munities from throughout the U.S. and Canada were represented at the opening last weekend of the 14th annual economic conference here of the Histadrut Foun- dation. The conference, called to draw attention to the in- creased financial needs of the social and welfare pro- gram of Histadrut in Israel, featured an opening address by Ambassador Zvi Brosh, minister for information at the Israeli Embassy in Washington. Brosh spoke of an auster- ity gram of belt tighten- ingliutt Israelis will have to endive to pay the price of peace with Egypt. He pointed to the high cost of relocating military instal- lations from the Sinai to the Negev under the Israeli- Egyptian peace agreement, and to Israel's increased energy bill due to the loss of the Sinai oil fields. Brosh noted that Israel will spend roughly 10 per- cent of its gross national product on defense this year because Syria, Iraq and Jordan still remain a threat to Israel's security. It will cost the Detroit Jewish community 20 per- cent more this year to pro- vide the same services as last year.
