in 20 years of ethnic com-
munity non-English lan-
guage resources in the
United States by Yeshiva
University has revealed
that at least 5,000 ethnic-
mother tongue schools are
functioning throughout the
nation, comprising some
four dozen different lan-
guage groups, with
Hebrew-Yiddish, German,
Greek and Spanish schools
strongest and continuing to
grow.
The year-long explora-
tion was completed by Dr.
Joshua A. Fishman under a
$40,000 grant from the Na-
tional Institute of Educa-
tion of the U.S. Office of
Education. Dr. Fishman
pioneered the first such
study in 1960.
