Churches of Christ (NCCC)
has been blatantly anti-
Israel. The NCCC panel
hearings were called after
the' organization was
criticized in January for an
anti-Israel information kit.
The NCCC plans a Middle
East fact-finding tour.

At the executive com-
mittee meeting of the
Anti-Defamation League
of Bnai Brith last week,
Nat Kameny, chairman of
AD12s national program
committee, said the
NCCC had a "disturbing
and troubling record of
pro-Arab, pro-PLO lean-
ings." Among the exam-
ples cited are: various
programs and seminars
"consistently unfriendly
to Israel;" "experts" used
by the NCCC for
guidelines who, for the
most part, the ADL said,
are former missionaries
in Arab lands with a con-
ditioned bias; anti-Israel
resolutions and the re-
cent NCCC press kit
which the ADL said seeks
"to undermine and re-

NCCC "has, always
claimed" an even-handed
approach in the Mideast
"when votes are taken in
the NCCC governing board
on resolutions affecting Is-
rael the views of pro-Arab,
pro-PLO spokesmen nearly
always prevail."
He said that instead of
testifying the ADL will
spell out its differences over
NCCC's attitude and stance
in a memorandum to be dis-
tributed to church leaders
throughout the United
States. "It is our hope to
provide the factual back-
ground on Israel and the
Middle East needed for in-
formed and sensitive Chris-
tian dialogue on a
grassroots level," Kameny
said.
The American Jewish
Committee announced that
it provided the NCCC with a
statement. An AJCommit-
tee spokesman said his
organization reluctantly
agreed not to attend the
hearings in order to have a
united Jewish response to
the NCCC panel.

Palestinian Arabs to na-
tional self-determination,
security in the region,
human rights issues, set-
tlements on the West Bank
and religious issues."
The AJCommittee also
expressed concern "with the
format of the hearings that

groups which have a large
and broad based consti-
tuency as well as to those

groups and Jewish indi-
viduals who represent only
themselves, who have been
publicly repudiated by the
American Jewish commu-
nity for over 30 years. For
the NCCC panel to devote
substantial time and atten-
tion to such discredited in-
dividuals is akin to having
Carl McIntire and Billy
James Hargis appear before
a panel as authentic repre-
sentatives of American Pro-

testantism."

The NCCC panel was
created last November
when the NCCC general_
board refused to adopt a

proposed resolution which
would have charged Israel
with violation of human
rights and called for sus-
pension cf all U.S. aid to the
Jewish state. The decision
by the NCCC to send a fact-
finding group was at the
time hailed as a "construc-
tive, responsible and
statesmanlike approach for
dealing with the Middle
East issues," by Rabbi Marc
Tanenbaum, director of
interreligious affairs for the
AJCommittee.

Arab Terrorists Sentenced
for 1976 Airliner Incident

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Three Arab terrorists, held
in custody for more than
three years, were each sen-
tenced to 18 years impris-
onment by a military tri-
bunal Tuesday, for attempt-
ing to shoot down an Israeli
airliner over Nairobi,
Kenya in 1976. Their trial,
which was closed to the pub-
lic, lasted five weeks.

The names and countries
of origin of the terrorists
have still not been dis-
closed. They were captured
in Nairobi while preparing
to fire a shoulder missile at
an incoming El Al plane
with more than 100
passengers aboard.
Seized with them were
two German terrorists,
Brigitte Schulte and
Thomas Rueter. All were
brought to Israel. The Ger-
mans were tried earlier and
each was sentenced to 10
years imprisonment.

Meanwhile, a military
tribunal in Nablus has
charged six Arabs with
plotting to murder the Is-
raeli military governor of
the West Bank town of
Jenin and his aides late
last year when the offi-
cials attended cere-
monies in Kabatiyeh Vil-
lage to mark the opening
of a new water pipeline.

According to the charges,
the Arabs planned to drop
sleeping pills into the coffee
served to the Israelis and to
kill them while they were
under sedation. The plot
was uncovered and the al-
leged perpetrators were
taken into custody.

No accidents are so un-
