Sell-Out Crowd Enjoys Hasidic Happening
Herschel Bernardi, the
"Yiddish actor," impressed
a sell-out audience of 3,000
Sunday evening at the 10th
annual "Hasidic Happen-
ing" at Ford Auditorium.
Bernardi captivated his
audience at the Habad-
Lubavitch benefit for more
than 90 minutes, weaving
prose, poetry and song into a
tale of the Jew in America
during the last 100 years
while ostensibly describing
himself, the Yiddish actor.
Accompanied by pianist
Elliot Finkel, Bernardi
sprinkled his performance
with songs from "Fiddler on
the Roof," old Jewish jokes
that were delightfully fresh
through his warm style, and

In his finale, Bernardi
talked to the audience
while putting on make-up
and turning himself into
Don Quixote de la Man-
cha from "The Man of La
Mancha" and sang "To
Dream the Impossible
Dream."
The concert also featured
"The Piamenta Sound," a
Hasidic rock group in this
country for three years.
They performed a number of
Hebrew songs, highlighted
by two show-stopping dance
performances by Mikhail
Tinman of Columbus, Ohio.
Tinman was a last-
minute replacement for
Yankel Levine of New
York, who recently suffered
a broken hand. His whirl-
ing, fast-paced ballet-style
performance delighted the
audience. It was reported
that Tinman suffered some

JERUSALEM — In his
first reference to the fall,
1981 Knesset elections in
many months, Premier
Menahem Begin said last
week that he might run for
re-election "if the members
of the Likud put their confi-
dence in me."
Sources said this is the
first time since his mild
stroke last summer that
Begin has spoken publicly
about leading Likud again.
He will be 69 at the time of
the elections and had prev-
iously said he wanted to re-
tire at age 70 to write.
Recent public opinion
polls show that if the elec-
tions were held now, Likud
headed by Begin would lose
to Labor by 20 seats. If De-
fense Minister Ezer Weiz-
man headed Likud, the polls
say, the difference would
only be three seats.
Engine Slip-Up
Brings New Rule
WASHINGTON — The
State Department is rewrit-
ing restriction on exports to
radical Arab countries after
General Electric engines
were almost shipped to Iraq
to power eight Iraqi navy
frigates.
Newsweek magazine said
federal law prohibits mili-
tary sales to Iraq, Syria,
South Yemen and Libya be-
cause of their support of ter-
rorism. Marine engines
were not included on the
list, however, and the
Commerce Department ap-
proved the sale with the
knowledge that an Italian
shipyard would install the
engines for the Iraqi navy.
More than 700 volunteers
participate in the Allied
Jewish Campaign Women's
Division's annual Phonogift
effort.
Benefactors of Sunday's Hasidic Happening were
introduced to the audience Sunday evening at Ford
Auditorium. Shown on stage are, from left, concert
chairman Irving Laker and Mrs. Laker, Irwin I. Cohn,
Mrs. Pearl Ruch, Dr. and Mrs. George Dean, Mr. and

to Rabbi Berel Shemtov of
Lubavitch, pianist Finkel, a
Russian violinist and Rabbi
Yitschak Kagan of

out Bernardi.
A make-up perform-
ance by. Bernardi will be
held in Grand Rapids in a
