Israel Changes
Detention Law

'JERUSALEM — A pro-
vision for administrative
detention dating from the
days of the British Mandate
has been abolished by Is-
rael.
Justice Minister Shmuel
Tamir told the board of gov-
ernors of the American
Jewish Committee that
while the British emer-
gency regulations allowed
indefinite detention with-
out charges, the new -sta-
tute, enacted a year ago,
limits such detention to six
months, with a judge's re-
view after three months.
The change will apply
both in Israel and in the
occupied territories of the
West Bank and the Gaza
Strip.

prominent Jewish
educators throughout the
U.S. who wish to gain ad-
ministrative skills. There is
an ever-increasing number
of administrative vacancies
at Jewish educational in-
stitutions, according to Dr.
Norman Lamm, Yeshiva
president.
The program is patterned
after a prototype initiated
at Yeshiva University's
Wurzweiler School of Social
Work. Participants will be
able to spend three sum-
mers at Yeshiva Univer-
sity, and during the inter-
vening two academic years
continue to teach and accept
additional administrative
responsibilities at their
hometown schools under
Yeshiva University super-

Assimilation Is
Seen as a Threat

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
President Yitzhak Navon
warned that unless im-
mediate steps are taken to
check assimilation, the
Jewish people may lose
three million of its members
by the end of this century.
Speaking at ceremonies
marking the 25th anniver-
sary of Bar-Ilan University,
Navon called on the Jewish
academic world to dedicate
itself to the existence of
Judaism and check the phe-
nomenon of assimilation.

THE HAGUE — The
Supreme
