Hebraic, Yiddish Legacies
Tributes to Eva Gilbert, 81

Eva Gilbert's participa-
tion in and devotions to He-
brew traditions and Yiddish
folklore are the legacies
children and grandchildren
cherish as tributes to her
memory.
Mrs. Gilbert died early
Feb. 1 at age 81. Funeral
services were held noon
Sunday at Ira Kaufman
Chapel.
Mrs. Gilbert, who was
brought to this country as a
child of 6 and lived here con-

steeped in Hebraic knowl-
edge in the traditional home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Ashinsky.
Her father, who taught
Hebrew and Talmud,
supervised a Talmud
Torah here in the early
decades of this century.
Her uncle, the late Rabbi
Aaron Ashinsky, held a
pulpit here before going
to Pittsburgh, and was
among the top world
leaders who created the
Mizrachi Orthodox
Zionist movement. He
was among the first
presidents of national
American Mizrachi.
Eva Ashinsky met her
husband, the late Philip
Gilbert, 60 years ago, when
he was active in the Yiddish
theater and Yiddish liter-
ary circles here. They were
married 57 years when he
died 31/2 years ago.
