NEW YORK (JTA) — A
photographic exhibit com-
memorating the 100th an-
niversary of the founding of
the Organization for Re-
habilitation through Train-
ing (ORT) will open Sunday
at the Yeshiva University
Museum in Manhattan.
The exhibit, through
March 23, is titled "A
Bridge 100 Years Long."
It includes photos only re-
cently found in ORT arc-
hives depicting not only
early ORT classes in East-
ern Europe but also the life
of Jews in the shtetl and
small towns in Czarist Rus-
sia in 1860 when ORT was
founded as a "philanthropic
fund" to provide training in
"artisanal and agricultural
occupations" for poverty-
stricken men, women and
young persons.

Blacks, Jews and Pharaohs

By deliberate design I
have maintained discreet
silence on the matter of
black-Jewish relations in
America ever since the con-
flict became a media event
last summer.
Believing that this was a
matter that could best be re-
solved by quiet, behind the
and
scenes, dialogue
negotiation between the
two parties themselves, the
farther removed from public
spotlight the better — the
National Conference of
Christians and Jews has
convened off-the-record
community-based discus-
sion groups all across the
country. It has been my
privilege to sit in, as a con-
cerned observer, at many
such meetings from coast to
coast.
My primary observa-
tion is that we are dealing
with a paradox. While
tensions between blacks
and Jews are real, there
is another sense in which
it is a phony issue.
Two deeply hurt and seri-
ously aggrieved parties are
meeting in an attempt to ef-
fect a reconciliation. Blacks
tend to view the current
problem as simply another
expression of old-fashioned
white racism, only this time
the antagonists are a sub-
group of the white world
who can be further iden-
tified as Jews.
Jews, on the other hand,
tend to view the current
situation as another expres-
sion of age-old anti-
Semitism expressed by an-
other group of gentiles who
can be further identified as
blacks.
An added dimension is
the fact that each of these
groups has a good reason to
expect more of one another
than of the rest of the world
at large.
Jews and blacks share
a common experience of
having risen out of slav-
ery. Jews and blacks
share a common history
of the struggle for dignity
and acceptance on their
own terms in a predo-
minantly white gentile
nation.
Blacks and Jews are both
aware that there are still
pharaohs in this world who
would wish to return them
to their enslavement.
The process of reconcilia-
tion is difficult, and very
painful at some times, but I
am fully confident that
these historic allies will
soon come once again to a
meeting of mind and heart
and the rift of the moment
will be healed.
