phrey's ebullient laugh, his
cheerful disposition, his
enthusiastic call for this or
that project. Indeed, for
more than three decades,
Hubert Humphrey was a
political institution in this
country, and his efforts form
a chronicle of the struggles
and challenges which
gnawed at the conscience of
this nation.
As Jews, we can re-
member Hubert Humphrey
for his valiant and forceful
calls for human rights at a
time when that was not the
popular or politically expe-
dient thing to do. And yet,
those who knew Mr. Hum-
phrey easily understood
that these actions arose not
out of some abstract ideol-
ogy of humanism, but most
of all out of his deep love for
people.
Indeed, whatever one
thought of his politics or
this program or that pro-
posal, one could not help but
be swept up by his buoyancy
and almost child-like trust
in the possibility of human
solidarity and personal
growth. And true to his
inner convictions, Mr.
Humphrey saw through the
Congress much of the legis-
lation that today we take for
granted, yet which in its
time was revolutionary in
its scope and vision.
Over the years, Mr.
Humphrey also endeared
himself to the Jewish
people by his staunch
and stalwart support of
the state of Israel. That in
itself might not be cause
for surprise: after all,
what politician does not
utter the obligatory
phrases of support for Is-
rael?

HUBERT HUMPHREY

However, two things
make that support different
in Humphrey's career.
First, he was there from the
beginning — and even be-
fore the beginning. Now
that Israel has become an
accepted fact of life, one does
not easily remember the
days when support for its
existence was not a com-
monplace event. Not so with
Hubert Humphrey. He was
there when friends were
desperately needed. And
over the years, that support
continued in ways known
and unknown.
"In the halls of power,
power is formed in the
halls," says an old expres-
sion, and it was in the halls
of Congress, behind-the-
scenes where Hubert Hum-
phrey's support and friend-
ship for the Jewish state
came to the forefront.
Moreover, the way Mr.
Humphrey would speak
about Israel or the work of
the Jewish National Fund,
with such informed passion,
could put many a so-called
knowledgeable Jew to
shame.

Court decision dismissing a
libel action brought by the
Unification Church against
the author and publisher of
a book that called church
indoctrination techniques a
form of brainwashing, the
American Jewish Congress
reported.
Nathan Z. Dershowitz of
the AJCongress, who served
as attorney for Dusty Sklar,
author of "Gods and Beasts:
The Nazis and the Occult,"
hailed the ruling as "a sig-
nificant victory for freedom
of the press."
Mrs. Sklar and her pub-
lisher— Harper & Row —
had been sued for $4 mil-
lion by the Unification
Church in the libel ac-
tion.
The suit was dismissed by
State Supreme Court Jus-
tice Edward J. Greenfield
last January on the grounds
that "the complaint is based
on statements reflecting the
author's opinion," and "no
issue of fact as to knowledge
of falsity or reckless disre-
gard of the truth has been
shown to exist."

What we do upon some
great occasion will probably
depend on what we already
are; and what we are will be
the result of previous years
of self-discipline.

Egyptians Continue Search
for Embassy Site in Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Nine
Egyptian diplomats spent a
hectic day Tuesday in
search of an appropriate
building for the Egyptian
embassy in Tel Aviv. But
despite positive comments
on what they saw, they indi-
cated they would probably
spend a week "until we find
the best."
The delegation was led by
Hassan Abdul Sammad
Kamel; a career diplomat
holding the rank of ambas-
sador in the Egyptian
Foreign Ministry. It was es-
corted by two senior officials
of the Israel Foreign Minis-
try, accompanied by real es -
tate agents.
"We are not looking for
anything specific," Kamel
said, "merely for something
that will fit our needs." The
delegation spent a long time
at an apartment hotel on
Hayrakon St. in the Tel
Aviv hotel area, close to the
Sheraton and the Hilton,
only a few yards away from
one of the most popular
beaches. They were offered
there two storys, each hav-
ing 13 flats. But the Egyp-
tian diplomat did not know
just how many members
would be on the Egyptian
diplomatic delegation and
did not know how many
rooms they would need.
The Egyptians postponed
their search for a private re-
sidence for the ambassador
and the diplomatic staff for
a later stage. It now appears
that the residence will be
either in Kfar Shemaryahu
or in Herzliya Pitua — the
latter being the residence of
U.S. Ambassador Samuel
Lewis and many other dip-
lomats. Kfar Shemaryahu
has the only American
school in the country. The
Egyptians reportedly were
interested in the
availability of such schools,
although it is believed that

for the time being no
families will come along
with the diplomatic lega-
tion.
There is a shortage of
houses suitable for ambas-
sadors, one agent said. Such
houses should have at least
three bedrooms, as well as
proper lodging for the house
staff. An ambassador's
house should be on at least a
quarter-acre plot. Current
rent in the Israeli market is
$2,000-$3,000 a month. The
Egyptians expressed no
interest in purchasing per-
manent housing.
