Gyp, "but I haven't any
money to pay for the meal."
"That's all right," said the
Lindy's cashier. "We'll
write your name on the wall
and you can pay the next
time you come in." "Don't do
that. Everybody who comes
in will see it." "Oh no, they
won't. Your overcoat will be
hanging over it."
Lindy's waiter: "Tea or
coffee?" Customer: "Coffee
without cream." Lindy's
waiter: "You'll have to take
it without milk, we have no
cream."
Customer. "Waiter, these
are very small oysters."
Lindy's waiter: "Yes sir."
Customer "And they don't
appear to be very fresh."
Lindy's waiter "Then lucky
for you they're small."
A man standing at Lin-
dy's bar was drinking by
himself. Every few minutes
he would let out a laugh and
then say, "Aw nertz."
"What's the idea?" the bar-
tender finally said. "You
laugh and then say 'Aw
nertz!" "Oh," explained
the bar fly, "you see I'm tel-
ling jokes to myself, and I've
heard them all before."
LAST WEEK WAS the
13th anniversary for Harry
Weiss and his Original Es-
quire Delicatessen at its
present site, 11 Mile and
Lahser, Harvard Row Mall
... Before signing a Jack
Shenkman lease, Harry
owned the Esquire on De-
xter and Leslie.
He has weathered all
types of economic storms .. .
and still retains a position
among the top delis around
. People like counterman,
etc. Bob Winkler, and many
of the waitresses and cooks
came with Harry from De-
xter. . Much of the kitchen
help, including Eli
Karavadas, is from former
Darbys.
Harry's celebration is a
continual one all year long
... that's why his weekly
specials never stop.
10th PRECINCT of De-
troit Police had its recent
banquet at Larco's on W.
McNichols Rd. for BUOY 10
(Business United With Offi-
cers and Youth of the Tenth
Precinct) coordinated by
officers Keith Wood and
William Heath.
More than 200 attended
including many of Detroit's
City Council members who
laughed at the ridiculous
suggestion by a local paper
that the tables were tapped
. The only thing wired
around here," said one of the
officers," is the electricity."
Only Pete and Mike Larco
are active at Larco's now . . .
Since brother Nick retired,
Pete cooks and chops up the
meat (Nick's former job)
downstairs, making every
day an 18-hour one ..
Year-old newlywed Mike is
the bar manager and ace
greeter.
Behind the cash regis-
ter is Jimmie Macri, mar-
ried to their sister Angie
... In the kitchen with
Pete are his sons Mark
and Mike and Nick's son,
Duke.
Have you ever eaten the
Sicilian breaded steak Pete
makes?
PUBLIC OPENING IS
Feb. 8 for "Chuck Muer's," a
large (13,000 square foot)
seafood restaurant/
roadhouse being built just
southwest of Toledo by the
Detroit-based C.A. Muer
Corp.
"Chuck Muer's" is at 1435
Baronial Plaza off Airport
Highway just east of 1-475
freeway . . . It is the 16th
restaurant to be opened by
the corporation, and the
first to be named for corpo-
ration president and foun-
der Chuck Muer.
' Chuck is a third genera-
tion of the famous Muer res-
taurant family which
founded Joe Muer's Oyster
House in Detroit in 1929.
He hopes to combine
the best qualities of the
corporation's seafood
restaurants, such as
Cleveland's Charley's
Crab and Ann Arbor's
Gandy Dancer, with the
organization's neighbor-
hood family taverns so
successful in West
Bloomfield, Northville
and Rocky River, Ohio.
Open display cooking ...
making and cooking of fresh
pasta and the cooking of
shellfish and stews in steam
trunnion kettles ... will be
a special feature at the To-
ledo restaurant.
A GOOD MANAGER is
one who keeps a low profile,
yet does his job with honest,
trustworthy and expert effi-
ciency ... plus being well-
respected by both help and
customer.
This is Nick Sorise, at Ex-
calibur, Northwestern and
Franklin Rd., south of 12
Mile . .. easily among the
best in the business.
Alex Kalleo Trio has been
retained to stay on at, Ex-
calibur at least until March.
WANT A BATTLE? ...
It's the mad mad world of
Joe Muer's on a Saturday
night when so many are out
to visit the seafood institu-
tion . . . Nothing in the
world ... food especially .
is really, worth the unbe-
lievable battle and waiting
. unless it is hard to get
.. which is no problem in
Detroit.
But we had a swell ex-
perience on our most recent
visit to Joe Muer's . True,
it was a Saturday night ...
true, all the rush-rush
commotion ... and true, a
Saturday night line up like
you wouldn't believe.
It was the 11th anniver-
sary of Morrie and Jeanette
Epstein, Frieda's sister
and brother-in-law ... and
eight of us were put in one of
those wonderful little rooms
Joe has stashed away from
all the turmoil ... so great
to join the celebration with
people like Lenore ("Babe")
and Sam Pickman and
Dorothy and Jack Greis-
man.
The scrod I had was
quite good ... but the
service was far above ex-
cellence ... We had a
young waiter, name of
