Part One, through the
synthesis of a mass of his-
torical information, de-
lineates the uneasy
coexistence of the two
communities and the
knife-edge of security
upon which the Jewish
community has always
teetered. Part Two,
Sources, depicts the role
of the Jews in Islamic
society, and draws on
passages originally in
Arabic, Hebrew, and
Persian, and Western ar-
chival material from the
modern period; most of
the passages from the
Middle Eastern lan-
guages have been trans-
lated by the author him-
self.

Society of America has an-
nounced that "The Jews of
Arab Lands" by Norman A.
Stillman will be released in
February.
The 473-page illustrated
volume explores the com-
plex relationship between
Jews and Arabs from the
time of Muhammad to the
mid-19th Century.
Addressing itself to both
an academic and general
readership, "The Jews of
Arab Lands" defines the na-
ture of the Jewish experi-
ence under Arab rule from
the advent of Islam and the
great Arab conquests of the
Seventh and Eighth Cen-
turies — when the majority
of world Jewry came under
Arab sway — through the
flourishing of Jewish cul-
ture during the Islamic
High Middle Ages, to the
decay of the Muslim world
and the rise of the West.
