ROME (JTA) — Dr. Rita
Levi-Montalcini, a 60-
year-old Italian Jewish
biologist, has received the
Saint Vincent Prize for
Medicine, generally consid-
ered second in worldwide
prestige after the Nobel
Prize for which she is also a
candidate.
She discovered a protein
called the NGF (nerve
growth factor) which pro-
vokes the growth and
differentiation of nerve
cells, considered of primary
importance for cancer re-
search along with the dis-
covery she co-authored, in
1960, of an antibody that ir-
reversibly destroys the
neurons of the sympathetic
nervous system.
Levi-Montalcini directs
the laboratory of cellular
biology of the National
Council for Research in
Rome, Italy's most impor-
tant research center, has a
chair in neurobiology at
Washington University in
St. Louis and is a member of
several academies.

Youth Discuss Jewish Life
in French-Speaking Quebec

MONTREAL (JTA) —
About 400 Jewish men and
women between the ages of
18 and 24 held a day-long
conference Jan. 20 to dis-
cuss the future of Jewish life
in the province of Quebec
and the best ways to adjust
to changes taking place
here.

It adopted recom-
mendations for a dialogue
between Jews and Fran-
cophone Quebecers to foster
greater appreciation for
each other's culture and
suggested that fluency in
the French language was
important for anyone who
wished to feel comfortable
in Quebec.

The conference also called
for wide distribution of a
pamphlet titled "Of Myths
and Facts" about Jews in
Quebec. It expressed con-
cern over the shrinking

economy of the province and
stressed the necessity for
Jewish communal leaders
to serve the interests and
energies of Jewish youths.
The conference, held at
the headquarters of the
Allied Jewish Commu-
nity Services, was coor-
dinated by that organiza-
tion's young people's di-
vision, the Canadian
Jewish Congress, Le
Centre Communautaire
Juif and the Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundation.
The provincial govern-
ment provided the neces-
sary funds for the gathering
and Premier Rene Leves'que
sent his personal assistant,
Evelyn Dumas, as an ob-
server. The conference pro-
posed the establishment of a
"Youth Council" with the
organizing committee of the
Jan. 20 meeting as its nuc-
leus.
