Three Awarded
for Aid to Elderly

NEW YORK — Two Is-
raeli social workers and a
nurse have been awarded
the ESHEL prizes for 1979
"for outstanding work on
behalf of the elderly," ac-
cording to Ralph I.
Goldman, executive vice
president of the American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee.
The prizes are given each
year by ESHEL, the Asso-
ciation for the Planning and
Development of Services for
the Aged in Israel founded
by the JDC and funded
equally by the government
and JDC-Israel.
Helen Weil, 55, a social
worker, and Rivka Nadiv,
45, a nurse, both members
of the ministry of health
office for the elderly and
chronically ill in Petah
Tikva, were each granted a
IL 5,000 prize "for develop-
ing at-home community
services for the aged."
They also organized a
group of elderly volun-
teers to assist infirm and
homebound aged, a pilot
project which is being
copied in other com-
munities in the country.
Bertha Ben Chaim, 63,
the director of the Ramat
Hasharon office of the Israel
Ministry of Labor and So-
cial Affairs, was singled out
"for her efficient leadership
and initiative in dealing
with the problems of the el-
derly in rural settlements,
and for having increased
public awareness of and
participation in developing
services for the aged." She
was given a prize of IL
10,000.

Wolf Science
Awards Given

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
For the second consecutive
year, 10 prizes worth
$100,000 each have been
awarded by the Wolf Fund
for scientific achievement.
The winners are: Prof.
Jay Losch of the U.S. and
Dr. Kent Blankester of Scot-
land, agriculture; Prof.
Jean Leri of France and
Prof. Andre Weil of the U.S.,
mathematics; Prof. Herman
Mark, U.S., chemistry; Prof.
George Allenback, U.S.,
and Prof. Guiseppi Akialini,
Italy, physics; Dr. Rosner
Sifri, U.S., Dr. Arvid
Carlson, Sweden, and Prof.
Ola Hanikevitch, Austria,
medicine.
The founder of the fund is
an 85-year-old multimil-
lionaire who remains
anonymous. The newspaper
Haaretz commented that for
the second time Israeli sci-
entists were not among the
winners.

of the 20 Jewish community
councils affiliated with the
Metropolitan New York
Coordinating Council on
Jewish Poverty are helping
to provide federal emer-
gency energy crisis aid to
low income individuals, ac-
cording to Jerome Becker,
board chairman of the
Coordinating Council.
