Yeshiva Receives
Federation Grant
NEW YORK — An-
ticipating a critical shor-
tage of Jewish early child-
hood educators within the
next several years due to
the steady increase of work-
ing women and the attrition
of Jewish early childhood
teachers and other person-
nel, the Fund for Jewish
Education of the New York
Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies is providing
Yeshiva University with a
$41,000 grant. The funds
will be used to develop and
innovative Jewish early
childhood education pro-
gram, Dr. Sid Z. Leiman, di-
rector of graduate Jewish
education, Yeshiva Univer-
sity, said.
According to Dr. Leiman,
who will supervise the pro-
gram, the two-year grant
will enable the university's
Ferkauf Graduate School
and Stern College for
Women to develop the spe-
cial program as part of their
joint BA-MS program in
Jewish education.
The program, Dr. Leiman
said, would be closely coor-
dinated with the Depart-
ment of Early Childhood
Education of the Board of
Jewish Education, which
will coordinate field place-
ment of trainees.
TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The
widely-held belief that the
late David Ben-Gurion
never committed himself to
what Israel's final bound-
aries should be does not con-
form to the facts, writes Is-
rael Kargman, a leader of
the Labor Alignment and a
member of the Israeli Knes-
set, in an article in the
morning Hebrew daily
Ha'aretz.
The author refers to a let-
ter from David Ben-Gurion
to General DeGaulle dated
Dec. 6, 1967. Ben-Gurion
reminded the French
president of a conversation
he had with him in 1960,
while on a visit to France.
At that meeting De
Gaulle had asked Ben-
Gurion what was his vision
of the acceptable and defen-
sible borders of the state of
Israel. According to the let-
ter, DeGaulle is reported to
have requested Ben-Gurion
to be candid on the assur-
ance that he would never
make Ben-Gurion's views
public.
Ben-Gurion responded:
"If you would have
asked me this question 25
years ago, I would have
said that the northern
boundary should be the
Litany River and the
eastern boundary the
River Jordan. But if you
ask me that question now
r
I have to tell you that
today we have two over-
riding considerations —
peace with our neighbors
and a large Jewish immi-
gration.
"At this time the territory
which is in Israel's control is
quite capable of absorbing
more Jews than I believe
want to come to this coun-
try.
"Furthermore," Ben-
Gurion wrote, "I can assure
you that the Sinai campaign
and the Six-Day War were
in no way acts intended to
expand the territory of the
state of Israel. If the Arab
leaders would not be an-
nouncing daily, day in and
day out, that their goal is
the liquidation of the state
of Israel then we would
never contemplate any
changes in the existing
armistice lines."
Following the Six-Day
War Ben-Gurion believed
that Israel must under all
circumstances retain the
old city of Jerusalem and a
part of the Golan Heights.
He had a completely differ-
ent feeling about the West
Bank provinces of Judea,
Shomron and Gaza, accord-
ing to Kargman.
There is nothing so ab-
surd or ridiculous that has
not at some time been said
by some philosopher.
