For "anything we can do to de- crease the United States' vulnerability increases our ability — as Americans and as Jews — to function effec- tively on behalf of Israel," said Dr. Elihu Bergman at the 33rd Annual Institute of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion Women's Division, 548-3747 24950 COOLIDGE AT 10 MILE - OAK PARK, MICH. Focusing on the economic and geopolitical ramifica- tions of the energy crisis, the institute featured as guest speakers Helen Junz, vice president of the First National Bank of Chicago, and Dr. Bergman, executive director of Americans for Energy Independence. They shared grave con- cerns about diminishing oil reserves and the govern- ment's failure to move be- yond discussion of alterna- tive energy sources. 1 .." Touching on the area that led to the present crisis, Dr. Bergman said increasing signs of instability on the Arabian Peninsula are playing into the Soviets' hands. Plagued by tribal rivalries, Saudi Arabia can fall to "the same types of elements as those waiting in the wings in Iran and now in control in Afghanistan." He enumerated ways in which Americans can re- spond. If the fuel efficiency of every American car were to average 35 miles per gal- lon, there could be a savings of four million barrels of oil a day. The use of nuclear energy, he said, carried lit- tle risk of a catastrophic ac- cident. "There are risks in the use of any energy source,' including the burn- ing of coal, he said. "It is important," he added, "that we ac- knowledge there's no perfect solution to our energy problems, but rather a number of pieces of solutions." Doris August, chairman of the institute, presided, assisted by associate chair- man Judie Narens, and Women's Division Vice President Ellen Labes. Melba Winer served as moderator of the audience discussion. Women's Division up- dates were given by President Dulcie Rosenfeld and Campaign Chairman Shelby Tauber. Joel D. Tauber, vice president of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, brought greetings from Federation. - (Men Lose 28-35 Pounds) ......, A Quickly, Safely, Permanently - i:;. . .. sh,, in just 6 weeks No Shots • \ k -...
