Ten Mile Rd. — Oak Park Open to the Community NO CHARGE thoroughly aided the escape from Nazism into Palestine. He was a leader in rescue efforts and state building and is commended as such by Israeli Prime Minister Menahem Begin. These and many other factors enter into his book "The Four-Front War" (Crown). The author's record as a leader in Israel's defense forces, as a builder of Zion, as special assistant to the prosecution of Nazis at Dachau, received commen- dations from Begin, in the foreword to the book, in which he states: "Your de- eds, Dr. Pearl, will be re- membered forever by the Jewish people, indeed, by all men of good will." Pearl led a group of re- scuers who organized es- capes for Romanian Jews. The four-front theme is defined by the author as the obstacles to statehood in Is- rael's early struggles for existence as follows: the Nazis, the British who created difficulties for the builders of Israel, the Jewish establishment and the elements. Here is the evidence that Pearl traced the his- tory of Israel's creation by exposing the enemies and also by criticizing those Jews who stood in the way of state-building. Pearl, who served in U.S. intelligence and was a wit- ness at the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem in 1963, has a dual subject in his book, the presentation of the revela- tions of the Nazi terrors, the role of Adolf Eichmann and the horrors that were im- posed on Jews, and the eventual emergence of the state of Israel in spite of the betrayals of pledges by the British. The puzzling factor in the important historical analyses by Dr. Pearl are his charges that men like Chaim Weizmann and David Hacohen were "tools" of the British in their schemes to obstruct Zionism and interfere with rescuing Nazi victims. There is no doubt that Weizmann had an uphill battle in his Zionist lead- ership. Was he to be de- nied occasional conces- sions to attain his tasks? Writing in the London Jewish Chronicle on "Weizmann as an A .tvo- cate," Jon Kimche sta es: "What Weizmann said that day in Rehovot, looking back on these years, was that the Zionist leaders had never been able to come to grips with the Arab ques- tion because the Arab lead- ers, in collusion with the British, had allowed them- selves to be used as an alibi by the British for every ac- tion directed against Zionist policy in Palestine. "There had been a few oc- casions when an indepen- dent Zionist policy might have been possible in con- junction with Palestinian or other Arab groups but only if he had been prepared to act in a manner damaging to British interests and dis- loyal to his British friends. This he was not prepared to do." is review This supplementary to the one on "The Four-Front War" by Robert St. John in the Dec. 21 Jewish News.
