THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Terrorism and Aggression: The Jews Are Used As a Trial Run for the Future By ARNO HERZBERG (Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.) It seems to be a principle of history of the last 50 years. Aggression, ter- rorism and wholesale ex- termination are first tried out on the Jews. Thy are the first victims of the forces of evil and de- struction. They are first to experience the onslaught of all those that want to do away with the values that have guided the Western World for centuries. How the nations react to the plight of the Jews gives a clue to the aggressors as to how far they can go with others. Most of the time no- body raises his voice. There is silence all around us. For this reason the tragedy, frustration and anger that is Iran is noth- ing new to the Jew. Be- fore the "students" occu- pied the American Em- bassy, they took posses- sion of the Israeli Mission and turned it over to the Palestine Liberation Organization. Nobody ut- tered a word against this action. The United Na- tions, as usual, did not notice it. So the "students" went one step further, took over the American Embassy and rounded up their hostages. Israel knows what it means to see her own as hos- tages. How many times this has happened when PLO terrorists raided Israel es- tablishments and towns! How many were slaughtered and how little concern was shown by the outside world! Even the Olympic Games continued as if nothing had tran- spired. Why should it be different when 50 American diplomats are involved? The world looked on when PLO thugs and their hel- pers took a plane with Is- raelis and delivered them to Idi Amin in Uganda. There was no uproar in the United Nations — only silence. Is- raelis were lucky that they were not censored for their raid on Entebbe to free the hostages. After all, they vio- lated the sovereign domain of Uganda. The Iranians have kept the hostages in one place in the midst of a city where it is difficult to re- scue them without seri- ous bloodshed. They have learned from Idi Amin who kept his hos- tages at the airport with its runways and open fields and invited action on the part of Israelis. Thus, all the might of the "most powerful nation on earth" cannot rescue the hostages and cannot pre- vent them from receiving shabby treatment. I have never violation of the Geneva Convention, nobody cared. When, in the war, prisoners were retained as hostages, it did not cause a ripple in public opinion. Every nation follows its own short term interest and everything else is only in textbooks of international law. So it did not come as a surprise when Mexico with- drew permission for the Shah to enter the country after his operation in New York. The Mexican gov- ernment voted for the UN resolution equating Zionism with racism con- trary to prior pronounce- ments. As in the days of Hitler, borders are closed to home- less refugees from Asia where a relentless enemy drives them out of their homeland. They face star- vation and decimation in Cambodia. Dachau and Au- schwitz were the proving ground for all this. Nobody cared at that time. There is only token concern today. Now that there is so much frustration and anger in America, per- haps we can feel what the Israelis have gone through year after year. Maybe we can under- stand what it means if countrymen are held for ransom, when we look around and see only blank faces that want to evade any action and find excuses for everything. So we see a repetition of the familiar story: First the Jews will be the victims, and then other nations will experience the same ag- gression later on. It seems that governments have not learned their lessons. Will they ever learn?
