Shapero was a leader in his profession, in the civic life of Detroit and Michigan, in the Jewish community. He was a leader in his congregation, as a devout Jew and as a philanthropist. When a governor of Michigan, or a mayor of Detroit, or a president of Wayne State Univer- sity, or a dean or president of Ferris State Col- lege where he earned his degree in pharmacy and later was honored with a doctorate, needed advice, they went to Nate Shapero. When leadership was sought in the Allied Jewish Campaigns, Nate Shapero was available. This applied as well to Temple Beth El, where he was a guide and devotee in all respects; to the Jewish Welfare Federation, to the community at large. Because he was a citizen with love for coun- try and people he also was a factor of signifi- cance in the Detroit Round Table of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. All loved him, people of all faiths and regardless of color of skin. He was a giant in the generations he had enriched with his participation and leadership.
