Congressional Delegation Finds
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
David Rohr, a staff member
of the Trade Subcommittee
of the House Ways and
Means Committee, said
that the recent Congres-
sional trip to Romania, led
by Rep. Charles Vanik (D-
Ohio), "was rather suc-
cessful, particularly in
terms of immigration to Is-
rael" by Romanian Jews
who wish to immigrate.
Rohr, who accompanied
the delegation, said "It was

who wish to immigrate to

meeting with Chief Rabbi
Moses Rosen and deter-
mined from that meeting
that the Romanians are
complying with their 1979
agreement," he said.
Rohr said his report of the
situation and similar re-
ports last week by Jack
Spitzer, president of Bnai
Brith International, and
Alfred Mcses, vice president
of the American Jewish
Committee, indicate that
the renewal of most-
favored-nation trade status
for Romania will be recom-
mended to the U.S. govern-
ment.
Spitzer and Moses were
in Romania as represen-
tatives of the Presidents
Conference. Spitzer said
that if the Romanian gov-
ernment's compliance
with the 1979 agreement
continues, he would
recommend that the
Presidents Conference
favor renewal of MFN
status for another year.
It was renewed on a year-
to-year basis as a result of
the agreement although
President Cicolae
Caeusescu of Romania has
been pressing for an un-
limited extension.
Meanwhile, Spitzer re-
leased a demographic study
of the Jewish population of
Romania prepared by Chief
Rabbi Rosen which appar-
ently settles once and for all
the controversy over how
many Jews reside in that
country. According to the
data, the Jewish population
in Romania numbers
34,663. Approximately
400,000 Jews lived in
Romania before World War
II.
Spitzer observed that "it
is an aging and shrinking
community. Almost 52 per-
cent are over 60 years old.

During the first six
months of 1979, Jewish
emigration from Romania
had dropped alarmingly,
with only 320 Jews depart-
ing for Israel — half the
1978 rate. Following the
meeting between the
Presidents Conference offi-
cials and Rumanian offi-
cials, emigration rose con-
siderably. By year's end, the
total number of Jews leav-
ing climbed to 1,100, just
under the 1978 total,
Spitzer said.
