have already done so, others
have made promises to fol-
low suit, but a few have
indicated they will not. My
campaign continues.
An assurance was given
me by the publishers of
"Cassell's English Dictio-
nary" as far back as 1977
that they would eliminate
derogatory definitions of
the word "Jew" in their next
edition.

The maligning definition
as appeared in their "1968
Cassell's English Dictio-
nary" appeared as follows:

tortionate tradesman,
moneylender, etc.; to get
the better of a bargain; to
overreach."

The new definition in the
"1979 Cassell's English Dic-
tionary," just published,

reads:
"Jew — Heb. Y'hudah,
Judah, son of Jacob, but
later used for all adherents
of the Mosaic Law, fre-
quently also called 'Israel-
ite' or 'Hebrew,' now applied
to professing members of
the synagogue, and loosely,
to racial descendants of the
Hebrew tribe; a citizen of
the state of Israel."
I now rejoice in the
knowledge that Cassell's
have fulfilled their promise
to me. If they can bring
about this change it should
not be too much to ask that
such assurance be given by
other dictionary publishers
in relation to the next edi-
tions of English dic-
tionaries.

do not know his stand on
the state of Israel. Many
gentiles love the Jews but
they are not necessarily
involved with the state of
Israel. This does not
make them anti-Semites.

Besides, Schmidt has his
hands full and if we wait
patiently he will get around
to Israel in due time. Why
pressure him? Let him vol-
untarily come, not under
pressure. Who wants forced
love?
Why not allow time to
heal wounds instead of
questioning the sincerity of
a friend?

The Bible says, "He that
bath friends must show
himself friendly."
There is a constant criti-
cism by Jewish leaders of
the West German govern-
ment, demanding sympathy
for Jews and Jewish causes
as well as revenge on those
criminals or suspected crim-
inals in the German
Holocaust.
The latest is a question-
ing of Helmut Schmidt's
sympathy for Jews and Is-
rael, and pressing him to
visit Israel as a sign of his
sympathy.

The Jewish Community
Center has opened a new
child care center in the
main Center complex in
West Bloomfield.
Operated from 7 a.m.
until 6 p.m. daily, the child
care center includes Jewish
observance and nursery and
educational activities.
Lunches are provided by the
health club restaurant, and
nap time is allotted.
Limited registration is
still being taken. Children
may attend from two to five
days on a half- or whole-day
basis.
