He is also chairman of the Governing Council of the American Jewish Congress, and serves on the National Council for the Arts, to which he was appointed by President Carter in 1977. Born in Vienna, he emi- grated with his parents to pre-state Israel at age 13. In 1943, he joined the Habima Theater, and a year later helped found the Israel Chamber Theater.
