"Toward the end of last summer, Leo Kaplan broke his elbow while playing softball at the Bert School field and wore a cast for six weeks This year, wife Shirley warned him not to play any ball yet, and even Dr. Harold Gehr- ing told him to take it very easy ... The first game of the season came and Leo, sneaking out of the house without Shirley knowing it, was back at his shortstop position at the same Bert Field ... The first ball pitched came straight at Leo ... He stuck out his bare hand and, you guessed it, Leo's back in a cast again, only this time he starts the season with it on. AJC Director Condemns UN NEW YORK — Sidney Liskofsky, director of the American Jewish Commit- tee's division of interna- tional organizations and a program consultant to the Jacob Blaustein Institute for Human Rights, has con- demned the failure ofa_he United Nations to pass a proposed declaration against religious discrimi- nation and intolerance. The proposal has been under consideration for the past 20 years. Liskofsky issued his statement at a recent UN- ESCO sponsored conference in Bangkok, Thailand. NEW YORK L.- The American Jewish Commit- tee has welcomed the action of the Alianza Popular party in Spain, calling for the establishment of full diplomatic relations be- tween Spain and Israel. Bertram H. Gold, AJ- Committee executive vice president, declared that the establishment of such dip- lomatic ties would be a "demonstration of the Spanish regime's desire to move toward greater democracy by normalizing Spanish ties with the one true democracy in the Mid- dle East, Israel." He added that the crea- tion of these ties "would be consonant with the position of the European Common Market countries that Spain hopes to join," and expressed the hope that the action of the Alianza Popu- lar would be emulated by other parties and groups in Spain. Israelis Improve Living Standard JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Despite high inflation, Cen- tral Bureau of Statistics re- ports show that the Israeli standard of living continues to improve. Some 15 years ago, only 28 percent of Israelis owned washing machines. In 1979, 72 percent owned them. In 1969, the percentage of Is- raelis who owned auto- mobiles was 7.5 percent. That figure rose to 33 per- cent in 1979. Nearly all homes now have electric refrigerators and 90 percent have televi- sions. Heart Disease Leading Factor JERUSALEM (ZINS) — The Israel Health Ministry has released data for the year 1977 which shows that heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in Israel. In 1977, Israel had 6,224 deaths attributed to heart disease and 4,259 attrib- uted to cancer. Other statistics showed that the overall death rate for men was 78 per 10,000 compared to 66 per 10,000 for women. There were 145 suicides by men, compared to 77 for women. Eitan Criticized TEL AVIV — The Labor Party's Yosef Sarid has asked Chief of Staff Gen. Rafael Eitan to tone down his remarks following an interview in the armed forces magazine. Eitan was quoted as say- ing, "Should the Soviets at- tack us, our army will lick them." Sarid said Israel paid for its over-confidence in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and asked Eitan to "drop his big-mouth policy." Example is the school of mankind; they will learn at no other.
