THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Misunderstanding Fed Dispute in Local Girl's Israel Wedding Karen Dickstein's mar- riage to Howard Levin has created a storm among reli- gious circles because their marriage in Israel was be- lieved to have been per- formed by a Reform rabbi without a witnessing Or- thodox rabbi. The new Mrs. Levin spoke to The Jewish News last week from her parents' home in Orchard Lake be- fore returning to the Uni- versity of Michigan. Karen, 21, is a senior in nursing and expects to return to Is- rael in July after complet- ing her degree and taking the state board examina- tions in nursing. Oil Price Hike Affects Israel MEXICO CITY (JTA) — Israel will pay about 30 per- cent more for Mexican oil during the first quarter of 1980 than it did last year and can expect to pay still more later as a result of price hikes announced last week by the state-owned oil company, Pemex. Mexico became a major supplier of oil to Israel after Iranian oil was cut off by the revolutionary regime in Teheran. Mexico also sells oil to the U.S., Japan, France, Spain, Yugoslavia and several Latin American countries. It is not a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) but Pemex said prices are revised every three months to keep up with international levels. The company deals di- rectly with client countries rather than with individual speculators on the spot market. at,, Call me. The two groups said that most of the Jews who sought to demonstrate at the Lenin Library near the Kremlin were detained in their homes. The three who man- aged to reach the protest site — Vladimir Prestin, Pavel Abramovitch and Elena Dubenskaya — were put in a KGB bus and driven around for two hours before being released in a remote suburb of Moscow. JERUSALEM — A coop- eration agreement between the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris (Uni- versity of Paris VI) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the fields of teaching and research and all aspects of academic life, took effect last month, after a signing ceremony at the Hebrew University's Givat Ram Campus. Signing on behalf of the French institution was its president, Jean Dry, while president Avraham Har- man signed on behalf of the Hebrew University. Dr. Lloyd J. She said this resulted in Goren's disparaging re- marks about the illegality of the wedding and counter-charges by the Re- form Movement. Asked if she believed the wedding was a pioneering move in Israel, Karen re- plied that it was important for Reform Judaism to be recognized in Israel, but the pioneering was their work in the Arava Desert. Karen will be the kibutz nurse when she returns to Yahel in the summer. How- ard is expecting to help di- rect a seminar center being planned at the kibutz. They later asked the Or- thodox rabbi to witness the ceremony, to be performed by the Reform rabbi, and to sign the civil marriage document. Karen said the Reform Movement in Israel pub- licized the event.
