Despite the hoopla some alleged "black leaders" have created (and the press has fanned), Jews and blacks are closer to each other than to anyone, par- ticularly more so than are blacks to Arabs. Because when you're talking history, you must remember what Arabs did to blacks: the slave trade. Or you can reflect on Mal- colm X's 1964 trip to Egypt. At that time, Nasser made promises to Malcolm about getting the question of blacks in the U.S. on the human rights agenda at the United Nations, as did many other nations. He did not. And that's not just past tense. Look today at the Is- raeli government and con- trast it with countries like Iraq or Syria. Israel is a democracy. , Its Arab neighbors are dictatorial, one-party states where the press and courts are held under thumb, while non-Moslems are subject to thumbscrews. The measure of black- Jewish relations is history and friendship — not the politics, emotionalism and bigotry of the moment. And what is Jesse Jackson doing rabblerous- ing abroad when 35 million blacks in this country cry out for human rights and nationhood? And who, for years, has supported the black rights movement with dollars in our treasuries and bodies on the marching line? TEL AVIV (JTA) — Greek Cypriot police are keeping a close watch on Palestinian terrorist ac- tivity in Cyprus where the Palestinians have repor- tedly set up a maritime training base to prepare re- cruits for sea-borne ter- rorist assaults on Israel. The Greek Cypriots are said to have asked the Lebanese authorities to ex- change information on the movements of Palestinians. But, according to the re- ports, the terrorists enjoy freedom of movement in the Turkish zone of Cyprus. The base's existence was disclosed by an Arab ter- rorist recently captured by the Christian militia in south Lebanon, Maariv re- ported. Costly Program NEW YORK (ZINS) — In a recent article, the New York correspondent for Haaretz, Yuval Elizur, called for Israel to re- organize its system of shlikhim (emissaries) in the U.S. He wrote. that the World Zionist Organization sends 137 shlikhim to the U.S., and that there are an addi- tional 30 sent by the Aliya Department and Jewish National Fund. He said the costs of sal- ary, housing, offices and travel can total $50,000 for each representative, or a total cost of between $5-$6 million for sending repre- sentatives to the U.S. alone. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Arafat Says His 'Armies' Will 'Liberate' Jerusalem LONDON (ZINS) — Yasir Arafat has claimed that his "armies" will "lib- erate" Jerusalem in an interview with "Eight Days," the Arab-financed weekly magazine which began publishing in London six months ago. The PLO leader was asked what he saw as the solution to the "big problem" of Jerusalem. "I don't see it as a big problem," he replied. "Zionist propaganda por- trays this as a big problem. Jerusalem is an Arab city. It was an Arab city and will remain an Arab city. Its oc- cupation will not last long." Asked "who is going to lib- erate it?" he replied: "My armies. Sooner or later, to- gether we will enter Jerusalem." . The interviewer, Colin Chapman, editor-in-chief of "Eight Days," asked whether Arafat thought that the Jews in Israel could accept living in a secular Palestinian state. "I don't care what they think," he replied. He said that he had begun to feel that there was a change in Israeli society. "Some of the Israeli people have joined in our struggle.
