Beth Achim
Institute Day

Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

ANOTHER NEW De-
troiters Club has been
formed many, many miles
away from the former home
town of its members ... Al-
most 100 comprise the
latest, taking in Scotsdale
and Phoenix! Ariz. ... Its
first meeting and a picnic
were recently held . . . Elec-
tion of officers is scheduled
for February . . . Among the
organizers were Esther and
Allen Lover, who can be
reached at 6548 E. Camino
Santo, Scotsdale, Ariz.
85254... (602) 991-5869.
Joan Finegood and
daughter Diane traveled
almost across the country to
have their hair done by
Allen ... En route to
California from Detroit,
Joan called from Mexico for
the appointments with him
. Allen had done Joan's
hair for 20 years when he
and Esther were living
here.
ANNUAL
27TH
President's Dinner-Dance
by Crescent Shrine Club
will be Feb. 24, at Adat
Shalom Synagogue ...
Frank Venice's orchestra
has been signed.
Election of officers by
Crescent, Jan. 21, will make
Jody Wiener the club's 26th
president ... taking over
the gavel from outgoing
prez Harry Kramer ...
First president of Crescent
was barrister Sam Lieb.
The Shrine Circus this
year opens March 14, and
runs through March 30 .
Shrine Night will be March
17 ... and Crescent Club
Day will be March 27.
LATEST TRAVEL
fiasco is that of local com-
munity folks being sent to
Acapulco, Mexico by a
travel agency who should,
know better but obviously
didn't ... The tour included
dinner every evening and
swimming ... When they
arrived, the hotel was only
half-built ... no dining
room . . . no swimming pool
. and they had to stay
wherever rooms were avail-
able, which weren't many
since it was the holiday sea-
son.
THIS MARCH WILL
BE 23 years in business for
Jerry Gurwin and his Auto-
body Klinic ... A lot of time
to think about the days
when Jerry first started out,
helped by his late parents,
Rose and Nate Gurwin, who
were always mighty proud
of him . . . but would be even
more so today ... Jerry's
been on Eight Mile Rd. 16
years already, moving from
Wyoming . . . and above ev-
erything in business he val-
ues reputation the most..
Nate always told Jerry not
to do anything at the shop
he couldn't do better than
anyone else.
BACK AT HIS DESK
after battling a bug for sev-
eral days, steel man Lou
Stein reports, "The doctors
have a new method for
diagnosing these things.

.

They say, 'If you feel better
tomorrow, you have the
24-hour virus.' "
"WHAT HAPPENED
TO the alleys?" asks Max
Horenstein . "They used
to be our meeting headquar-
ters and the place for fun
that kids nowadays will
never know. Handball,
baseball, kick-the-can and
other games a lot of people
miss who played them in al-
leys."
WOULD YOU BE.
LIEVE that before leaving,
Sonny Eliot has spent 32
years with WWJ-TV and
WDIV-TV (which took over
in 1978)? . Channel 4's
loss is a big, big gain for
Channel 2.
LOOKING BACK On
Columns Of Yesteryears..
JUNE 30, 1961 . . .
"Novel surprise party for
Stan Ackner and Fred Rap-
paport given by their wives,
Roz and Harriet, worked
two ways for the fellows ...
Both had a good time 'being
in' on the party ar-
rangements, but each
thought it was being given
for the other!"
JUNE 16, 1967 . . . "More
than five months -ago,
Frank Silverman, credit
manager at Sinai Hospital,
would daily see Betty Seid-
man of the nursing office
waiting for a bus ...Finally
he asked her if she wanted a
ride ... 'That 'pickup' has
blossomed into a beautiful
marriage as Frank and
Betty celebrate their five-
month anniversary."
JUNE 30, 1967
"Leonard Pitt, son of Iry and
Sarah Pitt, is due home
from Paris this month after
four years of studying mime
under
world-famous
Etienne Decroux
.
Whereas acting is moti-
vated by words, mime is
motivated by ideas . . .
Many aspiring actors and
dancers study mime to im-
prove their skills in the per-
forming arts ... It is the
ability to express one's self
without words."
FEB. 21, 1969 ... "Rabbi
Leon Fram, looking forward
to his first cruise, wants his
religious way of life assured
on the Sidney-Hill Carib-
bean Cruise March 7-19 ...
and has already contacted
Rabbi Murray Blackman,
head of the Hebrew Congre-
gation in St. Thomas, to
lead services while the SH
gang is there."
