Elat Readies for Winter Season
ELAT — This Red Sea
port, Israel's largest winter
resort, is set to welcome its
annual winter influx of vis-
itors after an unprece-
dented facelift that has
changed the town's appear-
ance.
The Elat Foreshore De-
velopment Co., an agency of
the Ministry of Industry,
Previous visitors to Elat
will hardly recognize the
new appearance of the re-
sort town. Many will arrive
on charter flights direct to
Elat from various European
cities and meet the first im-
provement on arrival at
Etzion Airport, where a new
international terminal has
been constructed.
located on or near the beach,
with a total of 2,200 rooms.
The largest hotel, the 4-star
Laromme Elat, has 300
rooms; other 4-star hotels
include the Caesar (152
rooms), Moriah Elat (107
rooms), Neptune (100
rooms), Queen of Sheba (92
rooms), Red Rock (116
rooms), Shulamit Gardens
(209 rooms).
Four star hotel rates in
Elat are approximately $40
per day for two including a
large Israeli breakfast.
An experimental model
beach has been laid out
along a 250-yard stretch
fronting the hotels, while
a new beach is being
planned to the east of the
existing facilities.

NEW YORK — Israf-
lower, a nationwide fund-
raising program for local
synagogues and Jewish
organizations, has com-
pleted its third successful
delivery of fresh flowers
flown from Israel to com-
munities throughout the
United States.
A project of the Union of
Orthodox Jewish Congrega-
tions of America, the Israf-
lower program involves 100
synagogues and community
organizations throughout
the country. Each par-
ticipating community
throughout the country re-
ceives Israeli flowers within
hours of their arrival time
at New York's Kennedy
Airport.
These specially developed
and grown multi-colored
flowers are packed in
bouquets of 10 stems each
with four flowers per stem,
which are delivered, still
fresh, to local organizations
which, in turn, sell them as
a fund-raising project.

lower, 116 E. 27th St., New

Passengers will be wel-
comed with a sip of Israel's
Sabra liqueur, a package of
dates and a compact He-
brew phrase-book printed
on an attractive fan. Elat
residents understand their
town's reliance on tourism
and workers in tourist serv-
ices receive guidance in
their contacts with tourists.
In the 1979-1980 winter
season, Elat has 11 charter
flights from various Euro-
pean centers each week, as
well as seven special flights.
These are expected to bring
30,000 vacationers com-
pared with 20,000 last
winter.
The charter flights origi-
nate in the Scandinavian
countries, the United King-
dom, Germany and Austria.
Elat's climate makes it
ideal for a winter vaca-
tion; the days are warm
with daytime tempera-
tures in the 80s — and
there is barely any
humidity. The Red Sea is
renowned for its bril-
liance and many experts
consider the scuba and
skin-diving the best and
most accessible in the
world.
Apart from the various
charter tours operating
from Europe, most Ameri-
cans arrive in Elat by air
from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem
(a 50-minute flight), or
drive the scenic desert road
to the Red Sea.
