Local Doctors Seek to Refurbish Dr. Hodgkin Gravesite in Israel A group of Michigan physicians are aiding in the establishment of a founda- tion to restore and care for the Israeli gravesite of Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who is given credit for first describ- the 1832 in ing classicalpathological entity, Hodgkin's disease. According to the "Biog- raphical History of Medicine" by John Talbott, the events that surrounded Hodgkin's death in the Holy Land are germane to a 40- year-old association with Sir Moses Haim Montefiore, the great Jewish philan- thropist, whose wife and he were closely related to the Rothchilds, the interna- tional banking family. An epidemic of cholera was enacting its toll in Palestine in 1866. Hodgkin, who had not been in the best of health, was afflicted with dysentery in Jaffa and died shortly thereafter. The pos- sibility of cholera being mistaken for dysentery seems reasonable. An obelisk of red Egyp- tian granite was erected by Montefiore over the grave at Jaffa and bears this in- scription: "Here rests the body of Thomas Hodgkin, M.D., of Bedford Square, Lon- don — a man distin- guished alike for scien- tific attainments, medical skill and self-sacrificing philanthropy. He died at Joffa, the 4th of April, 1866 in the 68th year of his age in the faith and hope of the Gospel."
