The new menu at Dubbs is much larger and exten- sive than before ... includ- ing a good "Dieter Delight" selection. READER SENDS a menu from Lindy's in New York ... not the original one that isn't there any- more, but an imitation at Avenue of Americas and 50th, across the street from Radio City Music Hall . . . "I would not recommend it" writes the reader. The menu is loaded with pictures of stars, present and past, who have eaten at Lindy's ... and old jokes ga- lore fill the pages ... like, Lindy's waiter: "We have everything on the menu to- day, sir." Jack E. Leonard: noticed. Now give me a clean one." ... or, Cus- tomer: "What's this in my soup?" Lindy's waiter: "Don't ask me, sir. I don't know one insect from an- other." . . . or Morey Amsterdam (to Lindy's headwaiter): "By the way, did that fellow who took our order leave any family?".. . or Customer: "Waiter, help! My tablecloth is on fire." Lindy's waiter: "I'm sorry, sir, this is not my station." The original Lindy's, owned by Clara and Leo Lindeman, was a New York classic ... Celeb- rities loved it there ... and the comedian's corner was a private sec- tion for people like Mil- ton Berle, Red Skelton, Joey Adams, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason, Jack E. Leonard, Groucho Marx, Fred Allen and others who would try out their jokes on each other. Nobody knows who is re- sponsible for this one (or claims to be) ... When I left Modern Delicatessen, about 1973, I had just raised the price of our corned beef sandwich to $1.00 (and wondered if I was doing the right thing) — If you recall Modern ... the corned beef was always cut by hand and had anywhere from 4. to 6 oz., which was about the heaviest sand- wich in town. , "After I left Modern I moved to a horse farm in Howell, Mich. and spent a few years breeding, train- ing and boarding horses. In 1976, because of illness, I was forced to give up the farm and moved back to Southfield. I'm happy to say that I am getting back in shape and feeling my oats. "Thought you might like to hear a few things that have happened to me just receptly. Though I have not been out much until the past couple of months ... wherever I do go, I am re- minded of the good old days. "A while back, I met a young lady who ap- proached me to say that she recognized me and she was the niece of Dar- bys executive chef John Kereszi. In May, I attended the Bar Mitzva (Northland Inn) of Paul Kerner, son of Lou and Bernard of Darbys. "At the Bar Mitzva, I saw my cousins Edna and Sam Boesky looking fantastic. It was nice talking about the old days. Also present was Sol Boesky (Sam's brother) and former owner of Sid's on East Warren. "A few months ago, in the lobby of my apartment, I was recognized by Gail Ryder, who is the granddaughter of our be- loved little (Darbys) Jewish cook 'Mama' Levitt ... and Wendy Chaderoff, the granddaughter of Dr. Ben- jamin Schlain. Dr. Schlain and his office on W. Grand Blvd. near 12th and then one block from Darbys . and he was responsible for the health of many of our children, including my three. "About six weeks ago, I met a lady who, on discover- ing that I was an old deli man, but who did not know me, commenced to tell me about the fantastic trays (her words) she used to get from Darbys. I thanked her. It certainly is nice to know that people remember your work — even 12 years later. Henry Kissinger's Regret LONDON (ZINS) — Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger re- cently told a British report- ers that his failure to press Israel to pull out of the West Bank in 1974 "was one of the greatest regrets of my office." Kissinger said if the U.S. had dealt with the Palesti- nians and the West Bank at the time of the disengage- ment agreements a true peace would have resulted. He said Watergate anti the installation of a new Is- raeli government blocked those moves. Ceil Feldman, formerly one of Darbys finest and her waitresses, daughter Denise, went to Uncle Harry's Delicates- sen on Little Mack (east side), had lunch, some dandy tasting cheese cake (nine flavors) and talked about the old days at Darbys. "A few days ago, some friends took me out to De- nny's on Greenfield at 11 Mile ... On the way out I heard, 'Hey, got a corned beef in your pocket?' Yes, it was an old customer from Modern Deli (which was ruled for may years by the Krugel family and then by Dick and George Gunsberg). "And again, at Denny's, an elderly gentleman (former Darbys patron) who said his wife recognized me but could not remember from where. His name was Sam and he left convinced that I was a 'singer' they saw in Phoenix ... Burl Ives. "Years ago, Charlie Melt- zer owned the Star Baths (which then became the Oakland Health Club) and I started my education (at 13) in the food business making cabbage soup, broiling steaks, cutting corned beef, etc. along with my brother Harry. "In 1940, I recall buying aged rib steaks for 24 cents a pound, skinless and boneless sardines for 10 cents a can. Selling a (Continued on Page 30) .
