TEL AVIV — Jerzy and
Nora Janovicz fought for 10
years for permission to go
from Czechoslovakia to Is-

They recently became the
first couple to receive such a
permit.
The reason for the mag-
nanimity of the Czechs was
that Jerszy and Nora
reached the age of pension.

cided it would be better to
let them go to Israel instead
of paying them each month
a sum of 800 Kronen.
The Janovicz family has
worked in several jobs.
Jerszy was a train engineer.
He drew his wife into the
profession and Nora was
perhaps the only woman in
the world who drove
engines. She finished the
highest course for train sys-
tems in the Technical
School in Prague.
The Janovicz family
lived in Raczin, a small
town in the Carpathian
Mountains. They drove
trains from all parts of
Czechoslovakia to East
Germany. But they de-
cided to give up a com-
fortable apartment, a
quiet life with a state
pension, because they
wished to live in Israel,
among Jews and with
their daughter, who is the
mother of three children.
The grandchildren are
unable to speak with their
grandparents, who do not
know Hebrew. The daugh-
ter lives in a suburb of Tel
Aviv. She is a draftsman
and her husband drives a
taxi.
The parents are living
with their daughter and
family. They learn Hebrew
and are getting support
from the Jewish Agency.
They are happy. "The mo-
ment we arrived in Israel
we forgot that we were re-
tired. We wish to work
again, especially on trains."
They said that there are
hardly any Jews in Czechos-
lovakia. All Jewish com-
munities were closed. There
are still about 6,000 elderly
Jews left, who are spread all
over the country and feel
