Senate OKs Klutznick Linowitz WASHINGTON — In separate actions this week the U.S. Senate approved President Carter's selec- tions of Sol Linowitz as the U.S. special ambassador to the Middle East and Philip Klutznick as U.S. secretary of commerce. Klutznick was approved on a unanimous 74-0 vote and is expected to be sworn in Jan. 7. The full Senate quickly approved his ap- pointment after the Senate Commerce Committee ap- proved the appointment without dissent. Klutznick took a leave of absence last month as president of the World Jewish Congress after his appointment was an- Orthodox Factions Fighting in Israel JERUSALEM (JTA) — Unprecedented violence at a meeting of Agudat Israel's central committee Sunday night has deepened disputes within the Orthodox com- munity and cast a question mark over the holding of its "Kenesia Gedola" — a mas- sive international gather- ing of activists — scheduled for Jerusalem in early January. Shlomo Knesseter Lorincz, who was the near- victim of 100 enraged Ger- rer Hasidim at the meeting Sunday night, threatened Monday that he and his "Zeiri Aguda" faction would boycot the Kenesia." Aguda sources told JTA Monday that Lorincz's men- tor, Rabbi Eliezer Shach, the rosh yeshiva of Poeveh would not attend the kenesia. Lorincz escaped un- scathed from the Sunday night melee. The Gerrers had come from their Ashdod community with the avowed purpose of demanding Lorincz's ouster and breaking up W. C. Trojan "Son of C. TR 5-0300 the central committee meeting, at which the Is- raeli delegates to the kenesia were to have been nominated. The Gerrers are offended by two recent interviews given by Lorincz: • In the Tel Aviv maga- zine "Monitin" the Knesse- ter gave a wide-ranging interview to Nahum Barnea on Aguda politics. The of- fense was not what Lorinz said, but that the interview appeared alongside "las- civious" photographics of women in "inappropriate attire." • More serious from the Gerrers' point of view was Lorinz's interview in Haaretz in which he agreed to the questioner's state- ment that the standards of the Aguda "Council of Sages" had dropped. He also seemed, according to the Gerrers, to be less than entirely respectful towards their Rebbe, Simha Bunim Alter. The Gerrers are the strongest faction numer- ically within Aguda and their rebbe is the strongman on the Coun- cil of Sages. Lorincz protested in a radio interview Monday that he had never heard of Monitin and certainly did not know it purveyed "las- civious material." He was acquanted with the inter- viewer, Davar's Knesset lobby correspondent. As to the Haaretz inter- view, Lorincz said all Or- thodox people agree that the level of the rabbinate was steadily falling since the days of the Talmud and the Babylonian gaonim. "The rabbis of previous genera- tions were greater than those of our generation," Lorincz said. "No one can deny that." This did not mean any lack of honor or respect for the present rab- binical leadership, he said. The kenesia gedola is in- tended as a massive show of strength for Aguda, trium- phant after forcing the abortion amendment through the Knesset. Thousands of delegates from the U.S. and Europe will attend and Premier Menahem Begin is to speak on the closing night. At age 72 he will be the oldest member of Carter's Cabinet. Linowitz was con- firmed by the Senate on a vote of 80-13. The dissent- ing votes were cast by Republicans unhappy with his role in negotiat- ing the Panama Canal treaties. Linowitz was nominated by Carter to replace Robert Strauss, who now heads the President's re-election campaign.
