Rabbi Bertram Korn Dies

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Bertram Korn, senior
rabbi at Reform Cong. Ken-
neseth Israel in Elkins
Park, Pa. died Dec. 11 at age
61.
Korn was senior rabbi of
Keneseth Israel for more
than 30 years. In World War
II, he was the only Jewish
chaplain in North China.
He was promoted to Rear
Admiral in July 1975, the

first Jewish chaplain to at-
tain that rank
A specialist on the role of
American Jews in the Civil
War, his 1951 book,
"American Jewry and the
Civil War," was praised as
the definitive study.
Korn was a president of
the American Jewish
Historical Society and of
the Association of Jewish
Chaplains of the Armed
Forces.
He was also a former na-
tional chaplain of the
Jewish War Veterans of
America.

Sidney Diamond

Sidney Diamond, co-
owner of Organization
Services-Advertising Spe-
cialties and Promotions in
Detroit, died Dec. 22 at age
47.
He was a member of Adat
Shalom Synagogue and a
member and past president
of Zager-Stone Lodge of
Bnai Brith, who honored
him as its "man of the year"
in 1960-1961.
Mr. Diamond was a
member of the state Demo-
cratic committee and foun-
der of the Livonia Demo-
cratic Club. He was a
member of the Wayne
County Second Congres-
sional District Democratic
organization and was hon-
ored by that body as its
outstanding man of the
year" in 1974. He also was
honored by the UAW "for
his efforts on behalf of the
'National 30 and Out Com-
mittee.' "
Mr. Diamond was active
on behalf of the Penrickton
Nursery for the Blind, the
United Farm Workers and
political campaigns.
He leaves his wife, Judy;
a son, Richard; a daughter,
Leslee; and his father,
David Diamond.

Dr. Silverman

Dr. Stephen Alan Silver-
man, a physician employed
by the U.S. Coast Guard
Public Health Service, died
Dec. 22 at age 40.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y.,
Dr. Silverman was a resi-
dent of Edison, N.J., at the
time of his death. He was
graduated in 1960 from
Tulane University's medi-
cal school.
Dr. Silverman was a fel-
low of the American College
of Surgeons, director of re-
sidency training at the New
York Eye and Ear Infir-
mary, on the staff of the
New York College of
Medicine and Dentistry and
the Middlesex General
Hospital and St. Peter's
Medical Center.
He leaves his wife, Mar-
lene; two sons, Marc and Ja-
son; his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Sidney (Florence) Sil-
verman; and two sisters,
Mrs. Judy Morse and Mrs.
Andrea Klein, both of New
York. Interment Detroit.

Forward Writer
Asher Penn, 71

NEW YORK — Asher
Penn, a former feature
writer and city editor of The
Jewish Daily Forward and
author of "Judaism in
America," died Dec. 24 at
age 71.
Prior to his affiliation
with The Forward, Mr.
Penn was the news and city
editor of The Day-Jewish
Journal. He also was that
paper's correspondent at the
United Nations.

Joseph Turner

Joseph Turner, a member
of Jewish and men's organ-
ization, died Dec. 23 at age
66.
Born in London, England,
Mr. Turner lived 43 years in
Detroit. He was a member of
Maurice Zeiger Lodge of
Bnai Brith, Oak Park Lodge
of the Masons, Crescent
Shrine and the Moslem
Temple. He resided at
25627 Greenfield, South-
field.
Mr. Turner is survived by
his wife, Vera; a brother,
Abraham of the Bronx,
N.Y.; and a sister, Mrs.
Norman (Estelle) German.

Halina Kronenberg, a
former Detroiter who was
active in Jewish communal
organizations, died Dec. 5 in
Colorado. She was 67.
Born in Radom, Poland,
Mrs. Kronenberg lived
many years in Detroit, prior
to moving to Englewood,
Colo., 11/2 years ago. She was
a member in Detroit of
Hadassah and Bnai Brith.
She is survived by a son,
Henry Sperber; a sister,
Sofia Broner of Buenos
Aires, Argentina; and three
grandchildren.

Irving Gold, 65

Irving Gold, retired
owner of the First Beer and
Wine Store in Detroit, died
Dec. 24 at age 65.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Gold owned his store from
1948 until his retirement in
1970. He was a member of
Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith,
Jewish War Veterans and
Eli Basse Dies,
was a security guard at the
Comedy Writer
Hazel Park Race Track. He
