UAHC Proposals Criticized
Editor, The Jewish News:
On Dec. 14, you featured
an article dealing with the
proceedings of the recent
convention of the Union of
American Hebrew Congre-
gations.
There were two seem-
ingly unrelated resolutions
that caught my attention.
The proposal to allow
Judaism to "permit" Jewish
descent to come from the
father, and the efforts to
acclimatize Russian Jewish
immigrants to American
Jewish life. The implica-
tions of . these two
enterprises are devastating.
From any point of view,
allowing the Jewish iden-
tity to come from the father,
as well as the mother is re-
trogressive. In an age when
women are just beginning to
assert their rightful role in
society, the very movement
that purports to champion
the equality of women now
wishes to take the right of
exclusive right of descent
from them.
Only in Jewish Law,
does a person's descent

and Judaism in particu-
lar. This is readily under-
standable considering
the society that educated
them.
To allow the same sort of
assimilatory trend to which
they were exposed to in the
Soviet Union is not going to
resolve their unique prob-
lems.

encouragement to someone
who has been taught all his
life that "being Jewish" was
undesirable, to know that
"being American" is a far
better option than being an
active, participating Jew.
There are far too many
problems weighing on
Soviet Jews arriving on
these shores that take
greater priority. Rabbi
Schindler assumes that
these people need both reli-
gious and material assis-
tance, above and beyond the
aid they are now receiving.
It takes a great deal of re-
sourcefulness to leave the
Soviet Union and this qual-
ity will hold them in good
stead.
Once Russian Jews mas-
ter English, they are bound
to succeed in spite of Rabbi
Schindler. They too, will be-
come part of the American
Jewish community, without
tampering with Jewish law
and custom.

as a Jew come from the
woman; all other major
religions carry descent
from the father. As long
as child rearing practices
remain the same, the
major influence on a
child's early develop-
ment is the mother,
rather than the father;
Jewish Law recognizes
this fact.
The
proposal
to
acclimatize recently arrived
Russian Jews to American
Jewish life puts Russian
Jews, Jewishly, right back
where they came from. In
the Soviet Union, one of the
ways young people attempt
to secure a more "normal"
life for themselves is to
marry non-Jews. Their
children, at least in theory,
can have the option of choos-
ing the non-Jewish nation-
ality when they have to de-
clare their "nationality" on
their identity cards. As a re-
sult, the children may have
a better life with the Soviet
system, but we, as a people,
are poorer.
Changing the rules in
Judaism will not solve the
problems of Russian Jews
either here or in the Soviet
Union. They may adjust to
American life, but will they
adjust to Jewish life?

rants from Russia today

The gathering was called

• As a memorial to the

killed with other Jews in
the January, 1941 pogroms;
• To expose Galdau and

Iranian Volunteers Reported
Infiltrating into S. Lebanon
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
Christian radio station on
the Lebanese border
claimed that Iranian volun-
teers have crossed into
south Lebanon from Syria
and are stationed in
Nabatiya, a village under
the control of Palestinian
terrorists.
There was no official con-
firmation in Israel but Is-
raeli sources said that it was
possible that a few of the
Iranians who landed in
Syria last week may have
infiltrated into south Leba-
non, but not in any substan-
tial numbers.
The report was broadcast
by "The Voice of Hope," a
small radio station north of
Metullah which is operated
by American volunteers
who support Maj. Saad
Haddad's Christian militia
in south Lebanon. Im-
mediately after the broad-
cast, Haddad's forces began
shelling Nabatiya.
Haddad reportedly met
with officers of the United
Nations Interim Force in
Lebanon (UNIFIL) to warn
them that he would shell
any village that harbored
volunteers from Iran.
Haddad also urged
President Elias Sarkiss of
Lebanon to unify all "true"
Lebanese forces for the sake
of the country. The Chris-
tian militia commander,
who is supported by Israel,
is not recognized by the gov-
ernment in Beirut and has
been branded a "renegade."
Meanwhile, Radio Monte
Carlo reported that Syrian
authorities said that they
would not allow the Ira-
nians to enter Lebanon un-
less the Lebanese governe-
ment agreed.
