THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
NEW YORK (JTA) — Re-
form Jews cannot use the
specter of black anti-
Semitism as a "pretext" for
writing off the black com-
munity, Albert Vorspan,
vice president of the Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations (UAHC), re-
cently told the UAHC's 55th
biennial convention in To-
ronto.
"Anti-Semitism must be
condemned, whether it is-
sues from an army general,
a cross-burner, a
Klansman, a PLO genocider
or a black extremist making
media hay out of the firing
of Andy Young," he de-
clared.
"But for us Reform Jews
that cannot be the end of the
matter. If some Jews are
prepared to write off the
black community, using the
specter of black anti-
Semitism as the pretext for
withdrawal, that cannot
and must not be our re-
sponse in the Reform
Jewish community.

cooperation," McCall added,
"that derives from a shared
experience with oppression,
discrimination, prejudice
and bigotry."
Vorspan disclosed that
Reform synagogues across
the country were currently
engaged in unpublicized
dialogues with black groups
in "hundreds of com-
munities" on such issues as
public education, crime,
jobs and housing.
On the national scene, he
said, UAHC officials have
mapped plans with the Na-
tional Association for the
Advancement of Colored
People "to promote a new
and more mature, tougher,
franker and more effective
relationship between those
blacks and Jews who care
about each other and who
refuse to be driven out by
the bigots, the demagogues
and hard-liners in our re-
spective communities."

"There is a commonality
of interest, a shared vision
of a better and more com-
passionate society that per-
sists and that epitomizes
the shared concerns that are
still there to be nurtured,"
he said.
New York State Sena-
tor Carl McCall, the rank-
ing black member of the
New York Legislature
who was recently nomi-
nated to the post of de-
puty U.S. ambassador to
the United Nations, said
that cooperation be-
tween blacks and Jews
was "both a religious
duty and a common ex-
pression of enlightened
self-interest." The
"theological mandate"
for cooperation, he said,
stemmed from a "shared
faith in the God of Israel."

Ministerial Settlement
Committee decided Tues-
day.
The decision is subject to
budgetary approval by the
Treasury which is expected
in a meeting between Fi-
nance Minister Yigael
Hurwitz, Agriculture
Minister Ariel Sharon and
Construction and Housing
Minister David Levy.
Some IL 1.6 billion are al-
located in the current finan-
cial year to settlements be-
yond the Green Line. The
Treasury has instructed the
Jewish Agency and other
settlement bodies to commit
themselves for a similar
figure to be used in con-
struction of housing.
Most of the new build-
ing will take place in
Judea, Samaria and the
Jordan Valley with a
total of about 4,000 hous-
ing units built in these
areas only.
Some 300 flats will be
built in each of the following
settlements: Kiryat Arba,
Maale Adumim, Karnei
Shomron and Ariel. Some
650 housing units will be
built in the Golan Heights,
500 of them in the regional
town of Katzrin.
Sharon, chairman of the
Ministerial Settlement
Committee, said Tuesday
the housing ministry was
fully prepared to handle the
task of building the settle-
ments "as fast as possible."
The resolution in the
committee was passed with
Prof. Raanan Weitz, head of
the Jewish Agency settle-
ment Department, and Jus-
tice Minister Shmuel Tamir
voting against. Weitz
argued that very little pre-
paratory work was done re-
garding the financial as-
pects of the population.
To do an evil act is base.
To do a good one without in-
curring danger, is common
enough. But it is the part of
a good man to do great and
noble deeds though he risks
everything in doing them.

Survivor, Wiesenthal Argue
on Whereabouts of Mengele
NEW YORK (JTA) — An
Auschwitz survivor claims
that Dr. Josef Mengele, the
notorious death camp doc-
tor, is apparently still living
in Paraguay while the gov-
ernment of that country
takes no steps to extradite
him or even acknowledges.
his presence.
But Simon Wiesenthal,
the Nazi-hunter who has of-
fered a $50,000 reward for
information leading to
Mengele's capture, said in
Vienna Friday that he has
reliable information that
the war criminal is now hid-
ing in a colony of former
Nazis in Dignidad in south-
ern Chile.
The survivor, Alex Dekel,
48, was about to undergo

Mengele, known to
camp inmates as the
"Angel of Death," was re-
sponsible for the mur-
ders of some half million
persons at Auschwitz, in-
cluding 200,000 children.
Many were victims of in-
human medical experi-
ments.
According to Wiesenthal,
who heads the Nazi war
crimes documentation cen-
ter in Vienna, the Chilean
government is well aware of
Mengele's presence but so
far has refused to respond to
an extradition request by
the West German govern-
ment. He said he had
learned from three inde-
pendent sources that
Mengele fled to Chile after
the Paraguayan govern-
ment revoked his citizen-
ship last August.
Chilean Foreign Minister
Hernan Cubillos told re-
porters that his government
has no information that
Mengele is in Chile.
