Roe's memoir, "A Blend of the Two," compiled and edited by James M. Rock and published by the Friends of the University of Utah Library, is composed of two parts. Part one con- sists of the memorialist's reminiscences of his native town; part two describes his life in America. The title "A Blend of the Two" mirrors the author's experiences both in the old country and in the United States. Born on June 7, 1898 in Seirijai near Suwalki, Roe was one of six children. The town's Jewish com- munity, to maintain the es- sential services, levied on all local Jews a "yeast tax." Unauthorized yeast was considered non-kosher, and the products baked with it were declared "treif." Another major cooperative communal effort was the baking of Passover matzot. Weeks before the holiday began, Roe relates, workshops "would be set up, consist- ing of long tables set on wooden saw horses. At the head of the table one woman would pour the flour into the receptacle; another woman would pour salt-free dough; an- other would cut it into small pieces and pass it along to women on both sides of the table stand- ing by with rolling pins. After they flattened out the dough, a man would mark it off into portions and pass it along to the baker who would put it into the hot oven to be baked." In 1913, at age 15, Roe immigrated to the U.S. where his brother Harry and sisters Rachel, Jennie and Rita had preceded him. He came via Ellis Island. However, he confuses it with Castle Garden. They were not the same. They functioned at different times, and were located in different places. Castle Garden was at the Battery at the southern tip of Man- hattan Island andserved as an immigration arrival cen- ter from 1855 until 1892. That year Ellis Island, lo- cated in Upper New York Bay, replaced it and contin- ued as an immigration sta- tion until 1943. Roe's first well-paying job in America was in a mining camp in Nevada where he managed a store. For the first time he witnessed a Fourth of July celebration that began with a daybreak salute of "cannon" (sticks of dynamite from the mines) and ended with a free bar- becue in the evening. In 1917, 'following the U.S. entry into World War I, the memorialist volun- teered for the armed forces and was sent for basic training to Camp Lewis, Wash. He was shipped to France where he fought in the battles of Saint Mihiel and the Ar- gonne Forest. Like many others, he was seriously wounded in his right shoulder, neck and cheek. After the war was over, Roe settled in Salt Lake City and became a suc- cessful businessman, com- r ____ NMI enhanced by numerous ac- companying photographs.
