Downunder Restaurant by
Doug Diehl of Doug's Body
Shop, and Dennis and Fred
Silber ... in the Hart Plaza
downtown . . . is a gifted
addition to the renaissance
of Detroit.
It is also an excellent in-
door place to eat, drink and
watch people ice skate out-
side to music . . . The large,
round rink and ice skates
are under the rental control
of Downunder Restaurant,
which seats 150 people in
booths and tables .... and
another 22 at the long bar.
Doug, Dennis and Fred
also have complete control
of all food and drinks in the
entire Philip Hart Plaza.
Leo Fein, of who few
people don't have some-
thing good to say, is general
manager of the Downunder
Restaurant, which gets its
name because that's exactly
where it is ... down under
the Hart Plaza on Jefferson
. There's all kinds of good
food and drink ... and valet
parking at Veterans Memo-
rial Bldg.
ACCORDING TO a re-
cent survey by the Michigan
Restaurant Association of
its 1,800 members,
this year's holidays look
bright for most Michigan
restaurateurs.
Of those members re-
sponding, 54 percent pre-
dieted their business would
improve an average nine
percent ... 21 percent esti-
mated their business would

WITH US

stay the same, while 25 per-
cent said they expected
business to be down an av-
erage of 14 percent.

HARD TO BELIEVE

. . but Club Berkley,
Woodward and 111/2 Mile, is
now a real rip-snortin'
country-western operation
.. big hats, high boots and
all, including "Comin'
Round the Mountain"
music.
Very fine former Club
Berkley chef Ezzie Holyk is
at the Pagoda on W. Maple
between Livernois and
Crooks in Clawson.

FORMER CLAMDIG-
GERS, to be known just as

Diggers come Jan. 10, takes
on a much broader restau-
rant concept then ... com-
bining the seafood with
bar-b-qued ribs, prime rib,
linguini with red clam
sauce, etc.
The same seafood will
remain . . . plus the raw sea-
food bar . . . The decor will
be brightened to make it
somewhat more casual . .
Instead of just a dinner
house, it will be the kind of
place people will stop by
after a ballgame, club meet-
ing, show or shopping .
Sandwiches, including a
half-pound burger and
steak sandwich or
homemade bread will be
served ... Prices will run
about $2 lower on most
dinners by including the
basic entree, vegetable and
hot homemade bread, and
having soup and salads op-
tional, a la carte.
Waiting time should no
longer be a problem on most
days . . . Seating will be on a
first-come basis, with no
reservations taken ... and
capacity will be expanded
from 185 to 225, by remov-
ing the salad bar and piano
bar.
The new concept at Dig-
gers will be very close to the
